The Prioress
She's taken a vow...of eternal violence.
The Prioress was a short lived series - lasting only two seasons - and yet it has struck a chord with audiences worldwide. Virtually ignored on its initial release it has since become a "cult".Prioress: Freeze!
Thug: You gottta be loony, lady - one shot from that piece and you could blow us all to hell!
Prioress: I was figuring on going somewhere slightly more...pleasant. The risk's all yours, jerk.
It was based - loosely - on the 19th century detective novels of Rev. J. Higgins of Port Talbot; "The Exceedingly Curious Mystery of the Poisoned Font" (1873), "The Lady and the Pastor" (1875) and "Who Will Save the Saviour?" (1876).
These works, although popular at the time amongst the lower classes, had long been forgotten. It took a genius like producer Claude Hessle - also responsible for (amongst others); "The Hathaway Conspiracy", "Shoot the Clown" and "Hey, Darwin?" - to see the potential.
Hessle began work on the project in 1983. Ditching the out-dated plots, getting rid of some of the more unfashionable religious elements, moving the location from Margam Abbey to the new base of a luxury yacht in San Francisco...He was on the right track, now all he needed was a star and some funding.
Luckily he managed to find both in the delightful shape of Factory Brigham-Jones, the actress daughter of a wealthy local industrialist.
Hey Presto! The legend was born!
