LUKE CAGE
to those who have no idea who the fuck Luke Cage is, he is one of few black super heroes from marvel comics, who saw the light in the early 70's. born carl lucas, he was a streetwise youth who was a member of the bloods gang in nyc. realizing the hurt he'd been putting his family through with his actions, he decides to make changes in his life. everything was on the up and up, until he was framed by his best friend
While in the slammer, carl underwent scientific experimentation and was granted super-human strength, and titanium skin. he used his new found abilities to break outta jail, and return to his home in ny, to become a "hero for hire" - who goes by the name Power-Man. friends of mine often accuse me of looking and acting like him - mainly because he's a big black guy, with a short temper. that's pretty much me in a nutshell, so i cannot disputeCHILDHOOD
I'm sure anyone whos anyone, can vouch when i say "i miss my childhood!" life as a kid, pretty much meant "NO WORRIES". the only thing you had to worry about was what the hell was for dinner, and if you were gonna have to flush some veggies down the toilet!playin kick/dodge ball w/all my friends on the block, chasin down the icecream man, gettin free shit from SNOW-BALL - the slush-truck driver [my fav was fritos drenced in chilli/cheese], my aunt B.B gathering all the kids she could and taking us to a fun-filled utopia [where ever it may be], and my first kiss w/nicole turner in that tree...some of my most cherrished memories.the holiday seasons were, without a doubt, the best times of a kid's life! it wasn't all about the gifts under the tree with me though. one thing i really enjoyed about christmas time, was everyone's decorations on their homes. my aunt would take the kids driving through all kinds of areas at night - just to see everyones christmas decorations. i would look forward to that every year. no amount of money could buy that kind of happiness.but the one thing that i will always hold dear when it comes to my adolecent days, is CARTOONS. they could not be beat! i think they were at their best when i [or anyone else in my age bracket] was comin up - im talkin mid 80's - early 90's. all you needed was a bowl of your favorite cereal [in my case, cap'n & cinnamon toast crunch], and a nice spot on the couch! ahhhh the good ol'days eh???
ARCADE
anyone who knows me well, knows that i'm a street fighter nut [i've been one since i was 11, and if you dont like it? you can sit on a broom handle and rotate one time - GO FUCK YOURSELF!] - and what better place to find street fighter competition, than in an arcade [or online i guess]. most weekend occasions, you can find me at this arcade called jamesgames, in the upland/ontario area. and you'll prolly only find me playin 3rd strike, or xmen vs street fighter [very pissed they removed alpha 3]. if you wanna see me, then holla atcha boy!HIP-HOP CULTURE WENT FROM THIS...
TO THIS...
WHAT ELSE CAN A NIGGA SAY?...
I love Hip-Hop!!! And when I say "Hip-Hop", I mean "HIP-HOP". There's a big miss-conception of what hip-hop really is. And right now, I'd like to tell you what hip-hop ISN'T! I'd say 99.9% of the music you hear on the RADIO, MTV & BET this day & age, mis-represents the foundation of what made our culture what it was...Hip-Hop! the mainstream/media does nothing but Tarnish it!Need I remind you of the "elements"? Which consist of MC'ing & Rap-Battling, DJ'ing, B-Boying & Graffiti Writing ? Since the dawn of the new millennium, I've yet to see artists who represent even one of these elements in their music, or their videos thus far [with the exception of very few]. The sad part is that there are a few seniors still in the game that were icons of true, genuine hip-hop - but are slowly changing their ways to fit in with today's standards of what the people think the music should be - or "sell-out" if you will. "Cash In your soul" is what I like to call it.It seems as if the art has lost its creativity, and it doesn't take much to be a hit - as long as you keep Your music limited to Money & materialistic possessions, clubbing, sex & drugs of course! There are MC's who spit their hearts out on the MIC! mc's that spit positive shit - shit that makes you think - i.e.: conscious Rap. And yet, will remain "nameless"! as opposed to new cats like Young Jeezy, or Mims - who says, and I quote - "I can sell a mill sayin nothin on a track!" which, in this case, he'd be absolutely right! Which only proves my point that Creativity, and good Lyricism, are no longer a factor in producing genuine, hip-hop music! And if you ask me, doesn't say much for the current mind state of young black people - or any other group of people who thinks this shit is real!Seems like all you need to do is rap about a bunch of shit you'll never own, that sounds expensive, and these Youngsters will just eat that shit up "I got 67 inch rims on a humma - how Many times I gotta tell ya boy? I'm a stunna!" "big booty bitches dancin on my escalaaaade - uurbody know that cha nigga here is paid!" "i own 3 planets cus a nigga makin money - mickey d'eeees in my rooooom just incase a nigga hungry!" - All this simple shit can be translated into something even more simple - "I AM RICH!". That's all i hear when i even try to listen to this trash. Back that shit up with a lil Jon beat, and you'll fuckin make millions! i refuse to believe, that the minds of the people who love this shit, are that simple...are they?maybe young people today; want to "escape" the harshness of reality. To them, it's all about the party life - maybe they aren't interested in learning anything other than the price of rims or an escalade. maybe this is why you will never hear true MC's get spins on Wild 96 or 100.3 the Beat. it's like my man Guru of gangstarr said - "there's cats out there, underground and commercial alike, who rap about positive things - and they will never be apart of a daily rotation on your radio-stations...which i think, is a deliberate plot!" i agree with guru completely on that note!My theory? The rich White Man gathers his coons, tells them what they need to do to sell, knowing full well it goes against any good logic. the coon says "Yesa masta!", and makes the music. while all the niglets are partying to it and whatnot, the rest of the world is convinced, and need no further proof, that we are a simple minded race of people [something they thought of us since the beginning of time!]. the rich white man who owns the radio stations, intercepts joints by Kweli & Mos Def, who are a couple of the most intelligent MC's in Hip-Hop, and then burns them to a crisp. "the young people dont wanna hear about a corrupt government!" - "give em' the "sippin on patrone" song!" who the hell says "slavery's over"?Another thing that gets me about the whole situation, is the "Female Audience", and the huge, double edged sword that they weild. they are the first ones to go on oprah, talkin about "rappers call us is this!" and "rappers call us that!" - "rappers need to respect us!" - YET, that does not stop them from clubbin it up to the same music they just bashed on oprah! 90% of music played in clubs, is offensive to women. i dont attend clubs, but i know this for a fact! the same shit played on the radio, is the same shit played in clubs. wether you realize it or not ladies, when you attend clubs that play that kind of music, you are supporting that kind of music. when you listen to it on the radio, you are supporting it. 76% of mainstream record sales, are from female consumers. thats why you get cats like 50, talkin about "candy shops" and muthafuckin "lolly-pops". i pray that one day, women will realize, that the same artists you wish would respect you, continue to make the music they make because you blindly support it! WAKE THE FUCK UP!!! dont expect respect, if you can't respect yourself...a few months ago, I seen this shit on the news that pissed me off to the highest level of pistivity! the title of the segment was called "Hip-Hop...Art, or Poison!" and of course, the only examples the news people could come up with, to justify their judgement of the music, was what they see everyday on MTV, BET, and what they hear on the radio. dont get me wrong, i agree with the examples, because i believe it is poisoning youth - but what i dont agree with, is them not looking at the big picture. to blame the whole culture for this, is down-right disgusting! there is more to hiphop, than the everyday shit! hell - i dont even consider that shit to be hiphop! which brings me back to the "deliberate plot" bit. people only see, whats right in front of them! they dont see that there are mc's who actually go beyond the average, everyday bull, and spit to teach! KRS-ONE, is a prime example of this...along w/Dead Prez, and the like. and because of that, people like Oprah, and Bill Cosby, go nuts and blame the culture for the follys of youth...THIS SHIT HAS TO STOP!!!The only response i've gotten from people who oppose my idea, is somethin along the lines of "they are laughing all the way to the bank!", or "well, they gettin paid!...the cats you listen to aint gettin paid!" - in which case, i would say the only problem i have with the mainstream cats is the fact that they call their music Hip-Hop. they makin money, FINE!!!, but don't sit up and lie to the people talkin about "i'm hiphop" and shit! T.I. ain't no fuckin emcee, but the media calls his music "hip-hop". he's a commercialized, dirty south rapper! nothing more.another thing is that underground cats could easily resort to this bullshit if they wanted - but they know what comes with the territory! yeah you'll have money, but so long DIGNITY. so long RESPECT. i guess to some people, money means more than anything - and to those people i say "nothing lasts forever..."SAVE THE MUSIC YA'LL... Originally, the term was used to describe a Graff-Artist of the 80's - who would always carry his/her music collection, and art supplies such as Spray Cans/Tips & Markers, in some-sort of backpack. The music that the packer carried, would only be that of local/underground/un-signed artists.
the BP's choice of music, was based upon 3 rules:
1.Little to No Mainstream
2.Had to be commerically un-available
3.music was handed down/bought from the original artistafter a while, anyone who listened to such music, were simply labeled Backpackers. Nowadays, Backpackin really has nothing to do w/Graff at all. pretty much any underground head, will be considered a BP!it wasn't until the late 90's/early 00's, when the term was used to actually DIS someone who had that particular taste in music. For instance, i was in a Forum one time, simply stating how i felt about the current state of the music, and some fuckin bitch ass idiot called me a scrub BP. Instead of jumping on the defense,I refreshed my knowledge of what a BP was [wikipedia], And realized he was right, and simply thanked the punk for noticing. i'd rather be a backpacker than....other...so to all my BP's! we must unite against the enemy. we must go to war w/all those who think the song "aybaybay" is actually tight - those who think Dipset, is a better rap group than Wu-Tang - those who believe Jim Jones, is a better MC than Common...my brothas & sistas - we must destroy them...MUCH RESPECT
these cats paved the way...
I-POD
music means everything to me. with each day that passes by, my love for music grows deeper, and deeper. i'd be lost if it were'nt for the pod - i'm always on the hunt, discovering old/new hiphop, and all kinds of other music that i'm into! the pod, by far, is the best invention ever! i put alot of time and effort into my pod. everything from music, album art, correct tagging, all that good shit!unfortunately, my original black pod was stolen from right under my nose [props to the lil niglets who had the balls to do such a thing when im right there! maybe you'll learn a thing or two about some real music!] i was left w/no choice but to purchase a new, white one.it's almost at the status of my original, but i still got a few gigs to consume. i'll be damned, if i lose this one!Fav Hiphop Albums
Outta my collection, these are the ones I vibe with more than others...
JUST A FEW OF MY HEROES
AND LAST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, MY NIGGA...COMICS
: i keep my face buried in em! i've wanted to be a comic book artist for the longest time now. like previously stated, i love anything that has to do with western or jap illustration...and i love to read! so of course, the combo is simply magnificent. im more into MARVEL, but im into DC as well. DC's Characters are a bit corny [w/Superman & Green Lantern being the only ones i can tolerate!], but Batman & Night-Wing are the best in the DC line-up as far as i'm concerned - im also into udon's comics based upon popular capcom fighting games like street fighter and darkstalkers! i guess the team they have working on it isn't big enough or somethin - it takes them entirely too long to release issues...but the art is great, and i love what they are doing w/the story
