Carl Jung said the greatest fear human beings have is of unconditional self-acceptance. That we might actually come to know ourselves in the context of an alienating, other-directed, consumerist society seems daunting. How do we figure out who we are? For most of my life, music was the only way to connect that wouldnt eventually kill me. Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid once remarked, "people just say to be yourself. But if you really do that, it's the most threatening, subversive thing you can do." That's a sociological statement, a fact. Finding the courage to be yourself is a critical social act. Stand tall, do or die. Usually it hurts.
