It is Well is an American rock band from Dallas, Texas. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, John Spengler is the only official member of It is Well, and is solely responsible for the musicial direction of the band.While It is Well was officially formed in late 2006, the earliest evolution of the band and Spengler’s musical career can be traced back to the mid 1980’s, when, in Longview, Texas, Spengler was introduced to the world of music by his father Christopher, who would constantly play the guitar and sing for both his wife and his unborn child. Just a few years later, Spengler’s love for music would cause him to pick up his very own guitar and officially begin his career as a musician.Throughout the next few years, and as a teenager, Spengler took on the role of a freelance guitar player for numerous local Dallas and Fort Worth rock bands. Despite his success as a guitar player both locally and regionally, Spengler was continually frustrated with the general lack of quality music he was both hearing and playing. Eventually, this disgust led to Spengler’s immediate departure from all musical projects that he was a part of, sparking the beginning of his own musical career as both a composer and a songwriter.In 2005, with full focus upon his own endeavors, Spengler began piecing together a recording studio and teaching himself to play other musical instruments, all the while continually working on the musical compositions he had already written. These pieces are examples of some of It is Well’s earliest musical works.While still working on the studio, Spengler had also begun a search for other talented musicians to incorporate into his band as permanent members, but the tryouts and practices proved unsuccessful, as the other musicians consistently lacked the same unique musical vision that Spengler possessed. Frustrated, Spengler scrapped the concept of a joint member band, and began focusing exclusively on writing his very own material for an EP to release.In late fall of 2006, after spending over a year and a half in the studio with his instruments, a microphone, and a four track recorder, the music for the five song EP was completed. The name “It is Well†was chosen for the band, derived from the life struggles of American author Horatio Gates Spafford. The record, entitled The Bed Afflictions EP was officially released for sale to the public on November 28, 2006.
