Please introduce yourself and tell me something about you?
My name is Jennifer Ries, I’m 17 years old and at the moment, I complete an apprenticeship as Print and Media Designer. My passion for taking pictures started at an early age. After only practicing my drawing skills with pencil and colour, I soon discovered the endless possibilities of the digital medias. At the age of 13, I started working with “Photoshop 7â€. It took me months of practising and discovering the possibilities of this program, until I got to the point where I am now. Simultaneously, I focused growingly on the image itself and how it is produced. When I was 15 years old, I could afford my first digital reflex camera. In the following two years, I tried to improve the quality of my work and to take it to a higher level. These days, I have my own studio, called “Musenkellerâ€, where I can live up my own kind of art. I still work with my Canon EOS 350, which is now not the newest one, I admit. I use my 50mm 1,8 and 18-55mm lens. The most inspiration I find in fashion magazines and commercials, though I wouldn’t just call myself a fashion photographer, I think I am also a portrait photographer. Mostly my favourite subject for my pictures are women and fashion and/or beauty Shots. My goal for the future is to develop my skills and to improve the quality and message of my images.
How long have you been taking photos and for how long will you carry on?
Like I said, I started taking pictures when I was 15 years old, though at this point of time, it was more than just fun for me. From my 17th birthday on, I began to take things more serious. I rented and renovated a studio and took pictures of my friends and my family members. Nowadays, I almost cannot manage all the commissions of people who want to come for a shooting. As for my future, I don’t have any specific plans. There are many career paths, which I can imagine, but I just wait and see what happens. Things come as they should, so there’s no need to worry…
Which one do you think is the decisive element in photography, skill, sense or instrument, or anything else
I don’t think that there is just one essential instrument to practise the art of photography. It takes a lot more than just a good camera. I reckon that creativity, imagination and a bit of discipline are just as important in order to achieve good results. As well, you need a good knowledge of human nature because you must be able to feel the mood of the people whose pictures you take.
Do you distort images or modify pictures much? Why?
The process of modifying images is an essential part of my work. I experiment with different colours, contrasts and saturations of colours. Moreover, I edit the skin and face or add some new elements or if necessary, remove disturbing things. With this opportunity, I am able to enforce the expression and to perfect the image. I like the fact that with this new technology, you have this kind of power. Besides, photographs always lie!
