October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month...so please remember to get regular exams and a mammogram.
An Irish myth tells of a man named STINGY JACK who one day invited the Devil to have a drink. He convinced the Devil to change into a sixpence in order to pay for a drink, but instead of paying for the drink he pocketed the sixpence beside a silver cross which prevented the Devil from changing back. Jack made a deal with the Devil before letting him free. For one year the Devil could not harass Jack. Next Halloween the Devil met up with Jack again, and Jack made another deal with him to be left alone. Jack died within the year and was turned away from the Gates of Heaven. He went to the Gates of Hell and the Devil told him to go away. The Devil tossed Jack a glowing coal and Jack put it inside a turnip he was eating and ever since, with this Jack-O-Lantern, Jack has been roaming the face of this earth. Another tale tells of Scottish children hollowing out and carving large turnips and putting candles in them. Irish children accordingly used turnips or potatoes. In parts of England they used beets. When the Scottish and the Irish came to the US they found pumpkins, which of course makes a perfect Jack–O-Lantern.

My Interests

Well, aside from scantily-clad tall blonde women who dress like strippers, damn, there are so many things I'm interested in that I don't know where to begin.

I love relatively deep conversations about almost anything from current news, history, world affairs, local and national politics, to Hollywood gossip, cars, trucks and automotive stuff (and those 8 things hardly constitute an all-encompassing list).

I am fascinated with history. Think about it...how do you know where or what you are unless you know where you were and how you came to be here. Ancient Egypt and Europe of the Middle Ages hold a particular fascination for me. I am excited about the King Tut Exhibit coming to the United States in late 2005 and early 2006. I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

At Pitt, I am a Neuroscience major, so naturally I'm interested in research in the field. While each of the science disciplines at Pitt interested me, Neuroscience seemed to combine the aspects of chemistry, biology and psychology that most intrigued me. One of my favorite classes was The Biological Basis of Learning and Memory. What could be more interesting than studying how we think, learn and remember? Someday very soon, I hope to be able to return to Pitt to finish the last few classes that I need to graduate with my Bachelor's Degree.

I can't believe I didn't start this off with food. Oh, my, how I love food. I really love thinking, reading and talking about food. Most of all, I love eating good food. You know, we always say that we like "good" things, such as a good book, a good movie, and good food. Isn't that silly. Who likes BAD books, movies or food???? Well, I like almost all kinds of food, except Indian Cuisine, eggplant, and little dead fish with their eyes open on my pizza. Aside from good old fashioned American home cooking, I frequently have Italian and Oriental cuisine. I absolutely LOVE to cook, and in the past, I shopped a lot at the local farmer's markets and I've done quite a bit of home canning and even a bit of dehydrating. Mostly, I canned soups, chili and tomato sauce. I could probably live on chili alone. What more could one want??

I'd like to meet:

...YOU!!!! Additionally, I'd like to meet lots of scantily-clad tall blonde women who dress like strippers. Or scantily-clad short brunette women who dress like strippers. Or scantily clad medium-height red-headed women who dress like strippers. I suppose there is an underlying theme there.

Music:

Pretty much everything from The Eagles, like the entire "Hotel California" and "Hell Freezes Over" albums. I'd love to see them live. And I like the solo stuff from Don Henley and Glenn Frye as much as the stuff they do within The Eagles.

Fleetwood MAC. They are definitely at the top of my favorite artists list. I guess my favorite is "The Dance" but I still like the earlier version of songs from "Rumours." This includes the solo stuff from Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie.

Bob Seger. What can you say. The stories he tells within his songs say so much about living in this country and have such deep meaning for such large parts of people's lives that he is truly an icon. It's hard to pick just a couple, but "Roll Me Away," "Night Moves," "Like A Rock" and "Turn The Page" are usually on my radio or in a playlist.

Although I'm not really a county fan, who wouldn't love most of the music from Faith Hill and Shania Twain? I AM into what has been called "Southern Fried Rock," like music from Lynyrd Skynyrd or ZZ Top, and The Charlie Daniel's Band or .38 Special.

Yes, I freely admit (though few people would) that I actually liked the music of the '80s. The big hair bands ruled the '80s and many of us still love the stuff. I probably have every Bon Jovi album there is. No, I never had a mullet hairstyle, but pretty much everyone else in Pittsburgh did during the 80s.

I mean, who besides The Rolling Stones could draw the kinds of crowds that the big hair bands of the '80s drew. And speaking of The Stones...some of their greatest works like "Gimme Shelter", "Paint It Black," "Satisfaction" and "Sympathy For the Devil" are just as popular today as they were some 30 years ago. Not too long ago, "Sympathy For the Devil" was covered by Guns 'n' Roses and Natalie Merchant.

And, yes, I even liked a lot of the disco music. I was a huge fan of ABBA and The Bee Gees. Come on, admit it. I know the 8-track you had is either gone or doesn't work anymore, but you still listen to "Stayin' Alive" when it comes on the radio, as long as you are fairly sure nobody is around. Let's face it; we all wore polyester clothes then.

While I do like a wide variety of hard rock from AC/DC to Led Zeppelin, I've never been a big fan of heavy metal, rap or hip-hop, but then along came Linkin Park with their hard rock/heavy metal/rap fusion, and I now have a limited interest in rap.

A few songs from the soundtrack to "8 Mile" by Eminem like "Love Me" and especially "Lose Yourself" are very powerful. The kind of stuff you'll hear in a movie soundtrack like "Shake Ya Tailfeather by Nelly, Sean 'P Diddy' Combs and Murphy Lee is the kind of rap I listen to. Stuff by 50 Cent like "In Da Club" or by Ludacris like "Blow it out Your Ass" appeals to me far more because of the music and the story told in the lyrics. Stuff like "Gangser Party" by Tu-Pac and Snoop Dogg, as well as "Gangsta Shit" by Snoop Dogg I do like, but generally, I can't get into gangsta rap.

Aside from the groups I've already mentioned, I could be found listening to a wide variety of music from artists such as Aerosmith to Boston, Creed to Journey, and Foreigner to Pink Floyd. There may even be a song from Metallica now and then. Even though I have every album that Van Halen did with Sammy Hagar, I listen to pieces from Bach and Mozart, believe it or not.

Although I don't own a jazz or blues album, I absolutely love seeing local live jazz or blues bands in the Pittsburgh area. You know, I always thought that was strange how we say that..."seeing local live bands." As opposed to what? Seeing local dead bands?

Movies:

I've seen quite a few fantastic movies lately. The latest of the Bruce Willis Die Hard franchise was a very good sequel to the pretty-damn-good series. It keeps you on the edge of your seat for most of the movie. Bruce Willis plays the part that you'd expect, with the various witty but dry sarcastic comments at the most opportune times. Although a few...well, more than a few...of the stunts are hard to believe, and almost nobody could physically live through half of what Bruce Willis' character survives, it is still a thrilling movie and fairly well written. Without spoiling too much of the ending, the good guys prevail, so this isn't quite the doom and gloom picture that one wants to avoid when one isn't feeling all that chipper. This is definitely at the top of the list for the best action movies of the year. Go see it.One of the last horror movies I watched at a theater was Saw III. I'm really generally irritated by the shocker/slasher/gore movies with lame or no plots which Hollywood has inundated us with recently, but Saw III wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was eventually drawn into the plot and the movie managed to create the feeling of suspense and draw me into the plot. But, there is just a bit too much gore for the sake of gore than we need to see. If you enjoy seeing people tortured, maimed and killed, you will enjoy this picture immensely. The only fascination for me was the way the character's lives eerily intertwined with one another.
The movie Poseidon was basically a remake of the 1970s Irwin Allen disaster classic The Poseidon Adventure. It was true to the style of the classic Irwin Allen movies and not a bad way to spend a couple hours. It was full of adventure from beginning to end. The Robin Williams movie R.V. was also a not-too-bad way to spend a couple hours. It was silly at times but there was actually a touching message in the underlying story.
Movies. Oh, how I love motion pictures. That's what we called them, back in the day...motion pictures. Or movies. Yes, that really shows my age. But, at least I don't refer to them as "talkies." See, at one point in time, there were only silent movies, and you had to read captions for the dialogue. Before I was born, sound came to motion pictures. See, I'm not THAT old.
I grew up in the '60s and '70s, when movies came to television. With the rise of cable TV in the late 60s, there were new stations that needed some programs to put on, so we got old movies. It was fantastic. Especially on the weekends, all day long, you could watch all the old black and white (some were in color) science fiction and horror movies. I've seen every monster movie ever made at least twice. More if they weren't really bad.
With the advent of nuclear weapons, Hollywood had a new theme...monsters created by nuclear fallout. It seemed like every science fiction/horror movie involved an attack of giant ants (Them) or grasshoppers (Beginning of the End) or spiders (The Black Scorpion) or just a big pile of goo (The Blob). Writers are still getting ideas from these classics of the 50s and 60s for their more contemporary stuff like the Alien series. Look at the remakes such as War of the World's, The Fly or The Thing.
