Past Due began at good old Guitar Center Brea in early 2001. Greg Fernandez (drums) and Chris "Santz" Santley (guitar) started jamming together by playing 311 songs after work. Erik Salas (vocals), who was Santz' good friend, eventually joined in by adding some vocals. One night while the three were jamming at Greg's house, Vince Fernandez (vocals), Greg's brother, decided to join in and cover Nick's parts, while Erik covered SA's.Erik, Greg, Santz and Vince were having a great time and decided to complete their ensemble by adding a bass player. Justin Logan was another employee at Guitar Center Brea, and he decided to add his talents into the mix. They were now a complete band, but they still considered themselves a "just for fun" project. When they got a call to play a show in September of 2001, they realized that they needed a name. Together they agreed on "Second Time Around".After the band played a few shows, they received a lot of positive feedback, and were encouraged to take the band more seriously, and start writing their own music. Justin was working long hours and didn't feel that he would be able to dedicate enough time to the band, so he stepped down as bassist in January of 2002.One of Greg's long time friends, Jon Oden, had just arrived back from a year long stay in Switzerland. He was anxious to play again, and start a new project. His arrival was perfect timing for him and for the band. Jon checked out a few of the rehersals and liked their sound, so he decided to fill their opening for a bassist in February of 2002. The five members felt that it was a good time to change their name, now that they were going to be writing their own songs, and slowly phasing out of playing 311 covers. They emerged as "Downside" and had different ideas in mind. With the band progressing, they found themselves with too many shows and not enough time to focus on writing their own material. They were still playing shows mainly filled with 311 covers. The first three songs "Why", "Chucky", and "Three" were the only three songs the the band was able to write within a 6 month time period. In September 2002, Downside took a long overdue break from playing shows and began to focus on writing. The band wrote two more songs, "Bliss"and "Split", just before they hit a bump in the road. Jon, originally a guitar player, left the band to focus on some of his own ideas and dedicate himself to playing guitar in November of 2002.Once Jon left, the band regrouped, and Justin rejoined the band in February 2003. Their name was changed to Past Due. This was not only a name that everyone agreed upon, it was given to them. It was stamped on each band members hand at the last show they played as Downside at The Boogie in September of 2002.Past Due was back in its original line up, The Guitar Center line up, as they called it. Justin brought many ideas to the table and the band wrote three more songs; "Open Minded", "Break Away", and "What's it all About". The band played it's first show as Past Due in June of 2003.Past Due played heavily through the next summer and fall. In October of 2003, Justin left the band once again. He was already involved in another project and wanted to dedicate his efforts to what he had started earlier. A long time friend, and ex Guitar Center employee, John Gandy, filled the spot. John didn't join the band, but he did agree to fill in until Past Due found a permanent replacement. During this time the band was able to write two more songs, "Inside Me" and "You See Nothing".In November of 2003, Greg met Past Due's next bass player. Jeff Jaques (bass) was a guitar player who had been in and out of bands for quite some time. He had seen a few of Past Due's shows and rehearsals and really wanted to join the band. He was sold on playing bass, and he joined the band in January of 2004.Past Due is excited to finally have a permanent line up. Each member now feeds off of each other and contributes different ideas and sounds to their music. The band will continue to perform any place that they can get a gig.
