Born with African names Luthuli Ushaka Masekela and French last name Fontenelle, in the small town of Augier, Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia in the West Indies “LUM” was always very adventurous and willing to explore and learn how things work. He was raised with values from an early age. LUM moved from Vieux Fort to Castries with his parents and two (2) brothers where he attended the R.C. Boys’ School, this is where his music talents and interests grew with the help of his class mates one of which included one of his best friends and excellent singer Miguel ‘Andros’ Aubertin and Denish Reggie "Shilling" Felix (R.I.P.). His teachers noticed his potential for music and always looked to him when putting on small concerts at the school where he seemed to rock each and every show creating quite a small fan base. LUM then went on to the Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School where his interest in performing music died but his exposure to various genres including hip hop, R&B and jazz grew astonishingly as he traded music with classmates. LUM grew very interested in not just beats and sounds but lyrics and also the whit which was incorporated in the songs. During his teenage years he became very interested in Reggae music including music by Rastafarian DJ’s that seemed to make him more confident and it was this confidence that contributed to his academic success. After completing all his schooling LUM became a successful Scuba and Emergency First Response Instructor and moved from working in hotels to becoming self-employed. These years allowed him much time for himself and that meant he had more time to listen to new music and keep enjoying old music that he was fonder of. He began analyzing and listening to all genres of music and was always very critical. LUM realized the music was beginning to become tiresome and repetitious. He recorded his first track off his computer using the most basic of software and instruments to create a sound that he enjoyed. The song named “You Care” was a ballad, which used a basic piano and bass and included lyrics that stressed on love and how it would make the world a more enjoyable place to live. “I made music that I knew I would enjoy listening to over and over again”, he explained. “I never made music for anyone else but people who came across my songs enjoyed them and wanted me to make copies for them to enjoy also.” This is where LUM believed the push came from. He believed that if everyone was enjoying the music, then it must be good so he continued to produce, write and arrange his own music hoping that his message of struggle would reach the masses. “People would always ask me if I have nothing new and wanted to know when I would drop my album” he laughed as he spoke. It’s amazing to see LUM at work, he hardly ever writes. He just listens to the melody, and goes into the booth to record. He loves music and I checked it myself, he has over hundred (400) of his songs saved on his computer with the number still increasing so now all he has to do is just line up some tracks on a disc and he has a compilation cd. Thus far, he has released six (6) cds in nine months and at the rate he is going, all can expect that he is far from finished.At this very moment BIGG LUM has formed BIGG LUM ENTERTAINMENT which focuses on promoting new and upcoming artists. BIGG LUM is now focused on producing, writing, directing music videos and has taken a back seat in singing. He makes an occassional track now and then but producing is his new love.Thus far BIGG LUM has composed music with over 30 artists therefore look out for more and more artists rising from the depths to stand firm on the battlefield."My main objective is to get these talented individuals recognized and respected by all, which in turn will boost their self confidence and keep them away from negative influences.""Iron sharpeneth Iron!"
