On an average day I will usually read for a long time, maybe check out a film, listen to music, and of course I have to do some sudoku at some point. Of course, this is much too simple to really be the truth, but it basically gets the score right.
I would love to meet the baby that would spring from a union between Jesus and Hitler. I think that would be very interesting and everyone would have to love the little bastard.
I would have to say that my two biggest loves in music, at the moment, are Bob Dylan and hip hop. Besides that, I try to listen to a wide variety of music. In my opinion, for any type of music there is somebody doing some great work. On any given day I might listen to Massive Attack, Lucinda Williams, Aesop Rock, Ween, or Stravinsky.
I tend to be labeled a film-snob by most people. I have no problem with this because I have seen some pretty amazing pieces of cinema and I hold other movies to a high standard. Some of my film interests are contemporary Spanish cinema, sixties and seventies Italian cinema, and contemporary American directors like P.T. Anderson and Wes Anderson.
I don't have cable, but I do have a DVD player and netflix, which means that I can see good television. I have recently been thinking about comparisons between quality television and cinema. My opinion is that in the last few years the art of making a television show has been going through a renaissance. Right now I actually think there are some shows that rival the quality of the best films and a show has much more time to develop a story and characters. Shows that I recommend seeing are Six Feet Under, Deadwood, The Wire, The Shield, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Strangers With Candy, Northern Exposure, and Arrested Development.
Reading is easily the thing that takes up most of my time. I have dozens of interests and not nearly enough time to read about all of them. Some of my favorite interests are philosophy (especially Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein), 20th century literature, physics (especially quantum and string theory), evolution, economics, and lately I have been checking out some Zen Buddhism (if you haven't, give it a chance, Zen masters are usually good places to go to if you want to understand how we experience the world, and they get rid of the over-the-top mysticism of traditional Buddhism).
I believe that one should never be so firm in their opinions that s/he precludes ever holding the opposite opinion. For this reason, I really don't have heroes in the traditional sense. I respect many people, but my opinion of them is always capable of changing. The only person that I could probably label as a hero is Bob Dylan.
