The Righs

Irish-American Folk Punk!

About Me

Formed as The Rivers in Edmond, OK, in late 2005, The Righs is a Celtic-Punk band dedicated to bringing on an unforgettable live experience as well as infectious recordings.
Originally planned as a fusion of folk and emo by Nate Williams, the band soon changed direction after drummer Jackson Smith pulled up the song "My Life In The Bike Scene," an Irish-twinged look back at Smith's emo days.
Williams, having attempted forming a Celtic-Punk band once, was eager to try the new direction and quickly retooled several of the songs he had written for the project to have a more punk rock feel.
Thus, The Rivers' brand of Irish-American Folk-Punk was born.
After taking on bassist John Slawson and mandolin player Omid Nowrouzi, who learned mandolin only after joining the band, the band kicked it into high gear with Bryan Cross, who learned banjo specifically for playing with the band. After a year of playing gigs to much success, the band decided to crank it up a notch. Cross departed amicably from the band in order to pursue his college career. Soon afterward, the band incorporated Jian Azimi on the fiddle and Rian Dillard on the drums, while Smith moved to lead electric guitar and Williams began playing acoustic rhythm guitar.
After several sets, Dillard parted with band and drummer Kenny Taylor came on board.
The summer of 2007 signified a lot of changes within the band, including the departure of Taylor to pursue opportunities in LA.
The band also realized that a name change was in order. Another band called The Rivers, this one in the UK, was signed to a subdivision of Universal Records. After much deliberation, the band decided upon The Righs, "righ" being the Gaelic word for "king."
July of 2007 saw the band begin work on their debut album, titled "The Rivers Run Deep," with veteran sound man Chris Harris at Bell Lab (owned by Trent Bell, formerly of The Chainsaw Kittens) and at Harris' own Atomic Sound.
The album features:
Nate Williams - Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Vocals
Jackson Smith - Drums, Electric Guitar, Polymoog, Vocals
John Slawson - Bass
Omid Nowrouzi - Mandolin, Vocals
Jian Azimi - Fiddle
Tom Lynn - Banjo, Tin Whistle, Trumpet, Electric Guitar, Vocals
The Righs hope to release "The Rivers Run Deep" by the end of 2007 and to continue bringing on one of the best live shows the Oklahoma City area has to offer.
