"The media component in the service of globalization is directed towards the insidious erosion of diverse, traditional, cultural values; the normalization of attitudes towards liberalism, ’secularism’ and materialism; the encouragement of conspicuous and rapacious consumption inculcating a zombified mode of existence of sleepwalking aimlessly through endless cycles of insatiable consumerism; and the ’homogenization’ of the peoples of the world for the ultimate ends of market expansion and economic exploitation. However, this aspect of globalization need not succeed as it is consumer-dependent. That is, just as one does not need to buy a hamburger, one does not need to watch TV or absorb the incessant electronic probes and forays beamed into the skull that are aimed at dissolving both substance and identity of the individual. One can simply turn the TV off, or better still, smash the screen with a rock."
