About Me

My name is Cliff, and I live in that amazing stretch of time between "able to buy beer" and "midlife crisis," when you’re old enough to have learned the rules, but still young enough to defy them. I’ve chased thieves in Madrid, explored vine-choked ruins in the Caribbean, crossed blades with a master swordsman in the high desert, climbed the blustery heights of Maine’s Mount Katahdin, fed full-grown sharks with a flimsy pole, and braved Los Angeles' infamous 405 freeway…at rush hour.
The most important thing people should know about me is that I have an enormous amount of energy. Because of this, I have more hobbies than any sane person should. Most of them are really far out there, and all of them are really different from each other.
For example, I study Japanese sword -- the hardcore, four-feet-of-cold steel, in-your-face version called kenjutsu (as opposed to the sporting derivation called kendo). Think "The Last Samurai" and you'll get the idea, except that I'm not plotting rebellions and killing people.
I keeps snakes, partly as a small business. (I own nothing that will get bigger than six feet.)
I collect and create horror props, especially graveyard ones -- mostly for a Halloween party, but it's just a cool hobby in general.
I play games, from kid stuff to adult -- lazer tag, board, etc.
I love food and beer, from sushi to Thai to burgers.
Finally, and most important, I love language -- reading, writing, and words themselves, their sound and shape and smell.
I have no free time. (I wonder why....)
Anyway...welcome to my world.

My Interests

As I've said elsewhere, I have a ton of hobbies. Rather than trying to cram all that detail into this tiny space, I set up a separate blog entry for each one -- so look there, please.

Other, more minor interests, include:
—Autumn/leaves
—Campfires
—Rain/thunder/lightning
—Sleep, glorious sleep

I'd like to meet:

I like people who are honest, intelligent, funny, and kind. I like people who can remember what it was like to be a kid -- because that's an important perspective to keep -- and roll with that. I like people who bring me beer. ;-)

I don't like people with no integrity (liars, thieves), who are narrowminded (not curious/won't try new stuff, judge only by age/appearance), or assholes (the world, thank you, already has more than enough).

However, all that said, I think life is short, and a person is lucky to find even a few folks who truly share their main values and interests. So I favor friend quality over quantity, will not add people I do not know (so at least talk to me before trying an add, then it's cool!), and may delete people who do not keep in touch.

Music:

I like music, esp. 80s, punk rock, and a bit of classical; but will listen to (and usually appreciate) almost anything. A few favs include:
—Blink 182
—The Bloodhound Gang
—The Clash
—Enya
—Genesis*
—Gogol Bordello*
—Green Day
—Led Zepplin
—The Offspring
—The Police*
—Ramones
—The Rolling Stones
—The Smiths
—Stray Cats
—The Unseen*

Movies:

Mostly horror, with a touch of action, comedy, drama, and sci-fi/fantasy:
—Alien
—Blade Runner
—The Devil's Backbone
—Dragonslayer
—Edward Scissorhands
—Empire of the Sun
—Gremlins
—Heathers
—The Lost Boys
—Pitch Black
—The Princess Bride
—The Sixth Sense
—The Thing (the 80s remake)

Television:

I don't have much time for TV, and (as opposed to movies) what I watch is mostly humor plus a little drama:
—24
—Endurance (recent add)
—Family Guy
—Iron Chef (the original)
—South Park
—Whose Line Is It Anyway?
