Born into the artist tradition by the founders of DC’s own 1800 Belmont Arts, Amber Mims was destined to be an artist, but specifically a musician. Her love for music began at the age of 12 where she joined Duke Ellington School of the Arts summer enrichment program. Initially she auditioned for a speaking role but when asked to sing it was evident that music is her calling. She was later accepted to Duke Ellington School of the Arts where she studied classical music under the guidance of Stanley Webber and Samuel Bonds. Further into her study of music she began to love jazz, she later joined Ellington’s Jazz Band lead by Davey Yarbourough. Through the encouragement of mentor Mr. Yarbourough and natural talent for Jazz, she was accepted to New School University’s Jazz and Contemporary Music Program. As a student, Ms. Mims has had the opportunity to study with jazz greats Chico Hamilton, Reggie Workman, Kevin Burke, and Carla Cook.She has been able to perform at Universities and clubs in the DC, New York- New Jersey area. Now working on her solo compositions and group projects Ms. Mims hopes to bring something new to the world of music. Fusing all sounds of Jazz, R&B, Soul, and Hip-Hop she is slowly but surely bound to fufill her musical ambitions
