"WAY OUT! BOYS WILL BE GIRLS IN SPICE FILM by Louise OswaldThe Spice Girls have offered a plum role in their new film to five transvestite lookalikes....after spotting them in The People. Geri, Mel B, Victoria, Mel C and Emma collapsed in hysterics when they saw our sexy pictures of The WayOut Spice Girls. They begged producers of Spice The Movie to write a special dance scene for the wacky lads who perform in wigs and platform shoes. The wannabee pop babes Steffan (Geri), Giles (Victoria), Karl (Mel B), Paul (Mel C), and Mark (Emma) starred in clubs across the country. Now the fivesome will record a medley of the girls hits in stirct secrecy this week in a London studio. Extra wardrobe staff have been hired to dress the men in copies of the trademark Lycra outfits complete with plunging necklines. A film insider revealed: "The girls saw the picture of the boys in The People and marvelled at how wonderful they looked. But when they realised they were men, the girls burst out laughing. They couldn't believe how realistic their hair and cleavages were. They pleaded with movie bosses to include them because it would be a real hoot. The boys are terribly excited. It's the sort of break they've been dying for." They join a string of showbiz stars who have been signed up for cameo roles in the film "Published in the "People Newspaper" July 1997
The History of The WayOut Wine BarBack in 1993 Steffan and Vicky Lee were performing together and promoting venues such as Sunday nights at The Hippodrome Leicester SqIt was this work and our DragMania Shows that attracted the attention of Bar Manager Lee Whitby the manager of a small Wine Bar in Goodge Street asked the team to promote her wine bar every Saturday.Vicky had just researched the first 'Tranny Guide' book and knew that the cross-dressing scene lacked a unique Saturday tranny night. At that time Ron Stormes Travestie Extrordinaire was monthly and Teds had a Thursday night at a predominantly lesbian and gay bar..Jamisons Wine Bar in Goodge St was transformed into The WayOut Wine Bar each week. Every sign was changed every wall picture was changed to hollywood heroines. The first night was a great success attracting 100 people and has never had less than 100 since. So thourough was our makeover of the bar that many thought we had bought the bar, They would be amazed that they could not find the bar in the week.It was our policy in those days not to take pictures of visitors to the club as many were deep in the closet - If YOU have pictures from these days that you would like to see on these pages please contact us.After one year in Goodge St we fell fowl of licencing laws and lost our Jamisons venueWithout loosing a night we moved The WayOut Wine Bar a mile to Maceys (now a sports bar), opposite Miss Selfridge in Duke StreetIt was while we were at Maceys that we started the Wayout CLUB held monthly at Bar Circa, under the Satchi & Satchi building on Berkley Squar The CLUB ran in parallel with the WINE BAR for a year ThA change of ownership and management at Maceys made us move again. The History of The WayOut CLUBDuring the move from Maceys to a bigger venue in Knighstsbridge, under the Scotch House we merged the CLUB and the WINE BARCheck out this review from those days http://www.phreak.co.uk/anon/titbits/vicky.html At this time everyone at WayOut would be familiar with 'The Tranny Guide' book at a time when everyone on the tranny scene was finding their feet including our male admirers. People were looking for "like minded others". Tranny Guide awards would be cheered with enthusiasm. The 'Knightsbridge' venue was closed due to sound and licensing problems (possibly because Vicky Lee was the DJ - so once again The WayOut Club was on the move. We spent a short time under the theatre in Drury Lane at the time showing 'Cats'.We next were made welcome in Grt Titchfield Street at a two floor restaurant called 'Shorts' for another short period of time and many consider this to be one of our best venues. It's here that Vicky spun the discs again and Miss Sarah Lloyd became a regular helper and 'WayOut Girl' on other nights the venue was used by a swingers club and cross fertilization led to swingers becoming regulars at WayOut (and v.v) The venue was closed by the police as the venue had no licences and was staying open with various promotions every night of the week.Steffan and Vicky Lee had been hosting Wednesday nights at 'The Tatty Bogle' a Piano Bar under Kingly Court near Carnaby Street. With the loss of 'Shorts' for our Saturday night the WayOut Club was welcomed to 'The Tatty Bogle' This venue only held a hundred people and we ran on a one in one out basis for much longer than we should have done but we were determined to search for a good sound venue with long term prospects. In our search we passed over 'Charlies' in Crosswall as it dit not have sound and lights at the time. Instead we moved to 'Hot Shots' in Minories Charlies sister bar owned by the same person our good friend Tony.Compared with the 'Tatty Bogle' Hot Shots was enourmouse. It was hard to fill it at first and we had so much space we would shut off areas for ad hoc photo shoots. Tony soon after changed the venues name to 'Tiffanys' and by now the venue was getting busy. Some nights were linked with Ritual fetish Magazine and some of the fetish crowd cross fertilized and became WayOut regulars (from these nights Kim and Club Rub took the opportunities to use another of Tony's venues and became one of the most stable and largest fetish clubs in London) However we decided that WayOut should not hold "fetish nights" as the basis of our philosophy was "no dress code" and most fetish clubs and their visitors prefer "strict dress code".Tiffany lease ran out and Tony offered WayOut Charlie's just around the corner which he had now equipped with sound and lights. We have now been with Tony in the City since 1997.The WayOut Club has never missed a Saturday night. Some of the clubs regulars have also never missed a week. The club now enjoys the most mixed crowd that can be found in any club. The WayOut team have always encouraged non - bigotted people to join Trannies of every flavour whilst also always being welcoming to new and inexperienced people. The very best nights have been the most mixed nights. We recognise that WayOut has now evolved. Now many people visiting WayOut may not know the Tranny Guide book, and can't remember a time without the internet and the confidence it has inspired. Now WayOut is as much a diversity club as a transgender club. We believe this is why the club can be euphoric, spiritually uplifting but can also appear intimidating and awesome to some who are not yet confident with diversity.. (I used to feel the same way about the late Kinky Gerlinky nights).Note: A NEW Friday Night WayOut Wine Bar was breifly revisited in 2004Following a constant flow of requests for news of a Friday night we responded with our original concept for a new and more confident generation of T-Girls and their friends to mix with "like minded others" in a quality venue and to make it their own. This night ran from April to July 2004 and was enjoyed by all tha visited - However at this time interest was not strong enough to support a Friday night at this venue and was subsequently closed. Proving the phrase "use it or lose it".Vicky Lee
STEFFAN WHITFIELD It is with great sadness that I announce that my wonderful partner Steffan died at 10pm 29th Aug 2005His peaceful release came after a brave, painful, year long fight with the Cancer - Multiple Myeloma.Steffan passed out of this world surrounded by and embraced by his loving family and friends. In this time of worldly unrest Steffan held high, a torch for non judgemental diversity. He would always say ..." Age, race, background, sexuality and gender should have NO boundaries ... ... and neither should love ".His life and his choice of friends and lovers was a testament to his beliefs. His torch will be carried forward by his family and his many friendsSteffan's celebrated career started at the tender age of 6 with the 'Children's Theatre Company of London', where he received professional training in stage craft and make-up. With the company he featured in shows including 'Oliver' and 'The Sound of Music'. One part he was most proud of was that of Prince Charming. The costume he wore in this role he kept, and was worn again by Mario in a WayOut Club Panto in 2002.He was soon tasting commercial success appearing in major advertising campaigns including; 'Golden Wonder' crisps, 'C&A', and 'Woolworth's' and 'Ready Brek' he was 'The Ready Brek Kid'. With these experiences behind him it was full steam ahead for 'The Golden Wonder' … as they called him at school. At 15 Steffan directed his first music video for Harry Kakouli from 'Squeeze'. He appeared in many other artists videos including' 'The Thompson Twins', 'Bonnie Tyler', 'Barbara Striesand', 'Pet Shop Boys' and 'Martine McCutchen' to name but a few. At 17 Steffan signed his first recording contract with Elton John's label 'Rocket Records', along with Steve Grant and Chris Brannon. The group was called 'Splash' and they had considerable success in Europe, with a number one in France.Steffan's first appearance in DRAG was In 1986 at the 'Night of 1000 Frocks' contest at London's 'The Hippodrome'. Legend has it that Peter Stringfellow bet him he would not enter the contest. Steffan, in a dress, made for him by his mum Bonnie, won the competition that changed his life. (And he won the bet with Peter).Steffan said of this time in a recent interview "I got such an overwhelming reception when I went on stage and it was at this moment that I knew what I wanted to do." …A great fan of New York style "female impersonation" Steffan wowed London for two years with his 'Marilyn's Hollywood Revue'. Maddona was his next inspiration and Fraser Renton and Miss Karla joined him for 'The Man-Donna Show'. Vicky Lee was his next recruit and as 'Dragmania' the foursome toured together successfully for three years developing a unique style of show.In 1992, Steffan won "Miss Fire Island" in the USA. … Steffan said of this time "Working as a drag artist in the USA is so much more rewarding. Your audience really do let you know their appreciation of what you do."Throughout this time Steffan fronted night-clubs for various promoters. During 1993 Steffan was asked not only to front but to run Sunday night 'Bolts at The Hippodrome'. To achieve this he asked Vicky Lee to join him and it was here that a symbiotic union of was formed and was spotted by venue manager Lee Whitby who offered them regular use of her venue in Goodge Street where Steffan and Vicky started together 'The WayOut Club' for "boys, girls and inbetweenies".At the beginning of 1995 Steffan with Miss Karla and Fraser Renton became 'Total Re-Call' refining and perfecting the Dragmania formula, taking it nationwide, doing residencies at 'Funny Girls', and overseas in venues in Ibiza and Geneva. In 1998 Steffan spotted the rise of 'The Spice Girls' and was soon in their footsteps with the 'The WayOut Spice Girls'. The 'girls' with Steffan as 'Geri' appeared at some of the biggest venues in the UK including; 'The Dorchester Hall', 'The Grosvener House Hotel' and 'The Royal Albert Hall'. Steffan and the 'girls' even collected awards for the real 'Spice Girls' and cameoed in 'Spiceworld' the movie and in this one year appeared on over 30 different television shows returning four times to Richard and Judy's This Morning show - On one appearance Richard Madely said to Steffan and the 'girls' "We have a picture of you all - at home on our fridge". When Geri Haliwell appeared at G.A.Y she reunited with the Spice Girls - The WayOut Spice Girls and Steffan, in the famous Union Jack dress, proudly carried her across the stage.Steffan loved The WayOut Club and enjoyed 12 non stop years of this promotion using it as a base for his creativity, and the opportunity, to develop other performers, and to springboard other projects like; 'The WayOut Spice Girls', 'Technoglam', 'Exotica', 'Cabaret Extravaganza' and 'House of Drag'
