"Savu Sea are the epitome of kaleidoscopic freak-outs; their psychedelic brand of wow-pop is just the most refreshing thing for a jaded cynic like myself who thought that this sort of creative artistry was dead in the rock & roll world."
- Kent Manthie, Reviewer Magazine
"The River Light is a fascinating, multi-layered exploration of rhythm and cacophony, borrowing liberally from jazz and post-rock and combining the disparate elements into a final package both beguiling and imminently rewarding."
- Joe Hemmerling, Suburban Horror
"A lush, orchestrated approach to psychedelic music."
- John Pegoraro, Stoner Rock
"What’s most stunning about The River Light is that it blurs the boundaries between psychedelic and progressive. It has the ability to merge genres, creating a unique sound for a band focused on issue-related statements in the political and social realm."
- Andrew Fenstermaker, FensePost
"The River Light, the debut album from New York’s Savu Sea, exemplifies the band’s unique take on progressive indie rock. From late-60’s psychedelia to jazz to film scores, diverse influences come to light over the album's 11 tracks. But rather than simply paying homage to artists or genres of the past, the band has chosen to paint a series of contemporary political and social statements across a turbulent sonic landscape.
Savu Sea (pronounced SAH-voo) derives its name from the tumultuous body of water near the Timor Island of South-East Asia. It’s an appropriate moniker, given the aquatic ambience and often exotic imagery the music invokes. Tense, aggressive guitars flow out of pertinent lyrical abstractions, only to be tempered by contemplative organs and harmonies - all in an attempt to create the band’s vision of the state of the world at the start of a new millennium."
