After leaving school, Bronwen gets a job at a local grocer's shop, where she falls in love with the smooth-talking Cyril Philips. But he has a girl back home in the valleys and is furious when he is forced to marry Bronwen because she has fallen pregnant. He takes out his resentment and anger on her and their daughter, Megan - spending their hard-earned money in the pub getting drunk and becoming violent.
