About Me

i am ready for your seive.
i have told you i am gold.
i have always felt my weight.
is this something you can hold?
"A singer-songwriter out of Ohio by way of New York (at one point), Darcey Hile and band may, or may not sound like they're part of the so-called Antifolk movement. If you think Antifolk's a good thing, then by all means, but if not, well Darcey Hile is more than special enough to transcend any such comparisons. Beautifully emotional songs, haunting melodies, a pure, silken, soothing voice, sublime guitar playing (textures as well as tunes); this is soulful, jazz-tinged folk (-rock?) of the highest order. Think Diane Cluck, think Sonya Cotton, think Joni Mitchell if you will...Gorgeous!"
- When Sleeping Beauty Sang
"With her unique perspective on relationships, she'll tear out your heart strings and cut them off with a razor blade...It's her delivery and her voice that'll draw you in to her beautiful world of love gone Wrong."
- The Fevered Brain of Radio Mike
Born an only child in 1974. Named after John Denver's "Darcy Farrow" (an ill-fated mountain girl with a star-crossed love). Began to sing immediately. Grew up in a log cabin in rural Ohio. Developed an affinity for non-human animals and cheese whiz. Danced in her bedroom to the likes of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Footloose and Flashdance, but still sat cross-legged and ear-phoned in wonder of Donovan, the Doors and the Fab Four. Grew into a mopey, rebellious and hormonal creature who scratched the name "Oscar Schmidt" out of her guitar to write "Robert Smith". Coped with dead-end jobs and rural constriction by applying new formula: words + notes = songs. Born-again experiences listening to Daniel Lanois, Morrissey, Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey and Jeff Buckley. Moved to NY in 2000 and played the frequent open mic and the occasional gig. Learned from watching a wild variety of artists, namely: Shara Worden, Diane Cluck, Dave Deporis, Randi Russo, Ish Marquez, the Voyces, Mike Ill, Elizabeth Harper, Joan Wasser and Craig Wedren.Back to Ohio in 2002. Met sympatico souls who would further reshape Darcey's work. Performing occasionally, writing frequently, searching for signs of creative life constantly.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Darcey Hile - songs, voice, guitar
Sean Haider - bass
Tom Davis - guitar, voice
Mike Ouellette - guitar
Sister Christian - drums
Various recording fairies - namely Sean Haider, Eric Tippett, Matt Price & Mike Ouellette
Influences: i don't remember what i heard inside my mother's womb, but i'm sure it sounded beautiful. i hope the pine trees and the baying of dogs played a part in the penning of my songs.

then there were the things i consciously, willfully absorbed because i was awed by their deliberate, loving truth - joni mitchell, donovan, csny, peter gabriel, linda rondstat, cat stevens, leonard cohen, ani difranco, and diane cluck, to name a pinch of the sand.

then there were the subjects - friends, passersby, lovers and my self. i watched them as they watched me. their presence pressed into my heart of clay and i carved a likeness of that impression. and finally, comes the listener...you influence me as much as any other.
Sounds Like: lryics and melodies that compliment one another
