Sébastien Coccs : Imaginary Worlds
Sebastien COCCS became known in the late nineties.
He opened new roads in the fields of wood and glass sculpture. He started his carrere by sculpting wood; then he turned to glass.
His creations are both innovatives and technically remarkable. He is not one of those artists who are obsessed by the material they are working on, nor one of those who adapt their technique to the needs of an exhibition.
What makes Sebastien COCCS's works original is not so much his techniques as "world" of all his creations.
His early works show isolated figures in dreamlike settings which bring to mind the psychoanalitical surrealism of DALI and DE CHIRICO's world.
In particular, the artist's first sculptures are characterized by the differences in scales between the figures and the everyday like objects.
His constructions are not far from MAN RAY's collages or GUY BOURDIN or IRVIN BLUMENFELD's first photographs.
Taking his inspiration from photography, Sebastien COCCS gives his sculptures an erotic and sensual character.
The artist's passion for the female body is powerfull expressed in the series of sculptures called "PHALL-AISE".
Each sculputure shows as naked girl perched on top of a penis-shaped rock.
The artist uses photography to realize the sculptures that make up his compositions.
The women lying on penis-shaped rocks definitely give his work an erotic dimension.
With this series, Sebastien COCCS reaches a certain level of achievement.
He now presents the "PHALL-AISE" as a whole in an installation rather than as a series of sculptures. For this installation, the artist uses colored neons and glass boxes. A change, then, occurs in his style: glass, light and colors have appeared in his works and will remain the main features of his creations.
Rather than using glass sculptures in the way JEFF COONS did in "made in heaven" , Sebastien COCCS has decided to "paint with glass".
Glass becomes the most facsinating material. Now, his painting is characterized by his sensual way of treating the material.
Color itself becomes the medium. Because of the differences in transparency and opacity of glass, the painting creates its own light as the volume of sculpture creates its own shadows.
The dreamlike world is still the same but the artist expresses more his rock culture in his paintings.
The desert and, sometimes apocalyptyc scenes remind us of those of DAN SEAGRAVE who is famous for his numerous rock music disc covers.
About his recent works, Sebastien COCCS also explores the christian heritage.
In the manner of PIERRE SOULAGES or WYM DELVOYE, his originality shows through his church stained-glass windows, therely adding new perspectives to his work.
His stained-glass windows can be seen in several churches.
