"Los Angeles bred The Oxford Set pump out a retro rock and roll sound that shakes, pouts and stumbles its way out of the speakers. They like to tease, with many an intro suggesting that things will be shy and retiring before dropping the contrived misdirection and cracking on with the business of rocking it sixties style... The vocals fray at the edges, the bass makes a few runs and the guitars frizzle away with a combination of riffs, big chords and a bit of a solo..."Standby" is a bit different, and therefore worthy of a special mention, with its bouncy rhythm and great drumming. Following on its heels like an obedient dog, "Countdown" is the best of the bunch with an even more creative rhythm and some genius bass guitar...I for one am happy to hear the creativity and flair of The Oxford Set.-The Mag
Mixing 60s styling ala The Kinks with some mild garage etiquette ala The Hives, dubbing the band a very beat sounding name, and writing fucking catchy songs is The Oxford Set from LA...These cuts are like the abusive stepfather I never had, making me comfortable and secure and just when I feel relaxed, the groove moves into high gear and kicks my skinny ass for not mowing the lawn. Tasteful power chord melodies, the kind of music that makes my liver demand a beer at 9:40am. The singing is bombhe could substitute the words with Different Strokes theme song, and itd STILL sound sick Burning Question is the offspring from the estrus of Led Zeppelin and The New York Dolls. Its so tastefully dirty I wanna confess to my priest about time spent in the PhilippinesI love this, it affects my testosterone No wonder bar fights break out so easy. I hear this shit and turn into Rocky IV. This IS American rock folks." - Sugarbuzz Magazine
With big, beefy, brawny riffs of The Who/Oasis variety, snaky counterpoint melodic basslines, strutting ratchet-y pop with excellent Chris Pope/Steve Mason-style guitar flash, gales of feedback The Creation would have loved...this kind of musclebound Mod-tinged power-pop never falls out of favor. Kurt Adam screams his lungs raw with gravelly, gutsy vocals, and the whole band gets off on their sheer, unbridled enthusiasm. This 7-tracker is sussed, confident gear that will bring a smile to the face, a shake to the hips and instant Saturday night to anyone who's popped a few pills and is within hurling distance of the dancefloor. More of this and The Oxford Set will graduate very nicely indeed.- Whisperin and Hollerin
The Best of the Underground - 4 out of 5 stars. The Oxford Set are unsurprisingly not a group of public school boys from the south of England but a 60s influenced garage rock band from the mean streets of LA. Think the Von Bondies or The Sonics at their raw and raucous best crossed with pop sensibilities and melodies of Holly Golightly and your somewhere near their sound. Their debut EP found its way across the Atlantic to the Gigwise office and had us drooling from the first listen. From the initial acoustic intro which lulls you into a false sense of security to the aggressive, high voltage garage punk that follows this is all breakneck stuff. Somehow I dont think the hallowed halls of Oxford has ever heard anything like this, Its dirty rock n roll and we like it!- Gigwise
Now this is rock and roll! I have featured this LA band in the past but this was my first chance to listen to this complete seven song CD and man is it great. Combining the best of mid-60s English freakbeat with today's garage punk attitude, The Oxford Set put out relentlessly tuneful rock and rollGreat rock and roll.- The Rock and Roll Report
