Multitalented Bay Area lyricist prepares for world domination.
It's common knowledge that there is a severe shortage of quality female artists in the rap industry. Back in the day, you had the likes of Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Roxanne Shante to name a few, all of whom relied solely on their lyrical skills to dismantle opponents and sell records. Roughly 10 years ago, Lil Kim and Foxy Brown blew up, largely through XXX-rated lyrics and glamorous photo shoots. Since then, many women in hip-hop have followed suit, flaunting their assets and bragging about bedroom prowess to move units. Eve and Missy Elliott are some of the only mainstream female emcees that haven't built their careers off of bragging about their slutiness.
Hailing from the city of San Francisco, Melina Jones takes a more classic approach. She has music in her blood, thanks to the influence of her father, a renowned local soul singer who has worked with a variety of acts over many decades. She's been down for the cause ever since childhood, recording and performing diligently all over California since the early 1990s. Not confined to one specific talent, she can rap, sing, drop poetry, and play live instruments. She is the epitome of what they call "a total package."
Equally proficient on-stage or in the studio, Melina has developed a strong following in the Bay and recently rocked for hundreds of fans at a sold-out show opening for golden era New York legends Brand Nubian. She can deliver ferociously hardcore battle bravado as well as sensitive musings on personal issues, and everything in between. She is one of the most promising young artists on the scene--male or female--and is currently putting the finishing touches on her long awaited solo album Swearing Off Busters, to be released in early 2007. Give her a listen and discover what all the fuss is about.
