What is Salsa Dura? Literally translated it’s ‘Hard Salsa’, a genre of Salsa that is the polar opposite of ‘Salsa Romantica’. This is not Salsa cooking on a low flame! Salsa Dura is all of the hard pounding montunos and Barrio-conscious lyrics from the 70’s. We keep the tradition alive with our own original songs that can be just as experimental and open to new ideas as the first wave of Salsa Music coming out of New York, with our West Coast version. You can hear us playing our versions of such standards as “El Malo’ by Willie Colon as well as the jibaro-tinged original ‘Un Jibaro en la Ciudad’.Who is Salsa Dura? Formed May 2007 and based out of the East Bay City of Hayward, Orquesta Salsa Dura’s founding members include musicians Orlando Morales on Timbale, Carlos Ramirez on Conga and Scott Brown on Cuatro. The idea of a group that played our favorite Salsa tunes and original songs in the same vein was conceived and band members Mike Parykaza on Trumpet, David Barrios on Trombone and Dan Yockey on Bass were brought in to round out our sound. Carefully selected, we felt all the musicians involved were some of the best available for the job, and with this, Orquesta Salsa Dura was born! This is the music we love and it shows when we play. Look for our debut CD of original tunes (and maybe a couple of hot standards that we can’t resist to record) to be coming out soon...
