Highway QC's
They took their name from QC high school and the highway Baptist church in Chicago. They're Gospel Greats the Highway QC's.
The Highway QC's began their pioneering journey into gospel history in the mid forties when five Chicago teenagers set out to make a name for themselves on the gospel music scene. They first called themselves the Teenage Highway QC's but later dropped the youthful moniker. Like other groups, the QC's patterned themselves after the Soul Stirrers. Trying to duplicate the group's close harmony, the QC's wanted a sound that was smooth and clear. They wanted audiences to hear the message in their music.
In the beginning, the group performed primarily in the Chicago area and were sometimes billed as The Soul Stirrers Jr. But by the mid fifties the QC's had perfected a sound of their own. They had landed a contract with VeeJay records. "Somewhere to Lay My Head" with Johnnie Taylor on lead put the group on the road and they began traveling the gospel highway.
The QC's not only made their mark stylistically but the group was also considered gospel's greatest farm team- where quartet lead singers would hone their skills. It served as a launching pad for such R&B stars as Taylor, Sam Cooke and Lou Rawls. The fact that lead singers sometimes moved on however didn't detract from the QC's stellar reputation.Spencer Taylor and the Highway QC's still make music with must fire and fury as anyone on the gospel trail. After half a century of seasoning, more than forty releases, and appearances at the Apollo, Carnegie Hall, and Madison Square Garden, the Highway QC's are still singing the lord's praises. The group continues winning over audiences with their velvet voices- proving to all that they are indeed gospel greats.Gospel legends Spencer Taylor and the Highway QC's have been performing their inspirational music for over 56 years, achieving truly legendary status within the genre. The Chicago quartet has been through many changes in membership, style, and instrumentation, but has remained one of the tightest, most stirring groups of their ilk.
