Two teenagers were killed last night when their car slammed into a utility pole on eastbound Route 22 in Mountainside.
Konstanti Potouridis, 18, of Johnson Drive in New Providence, and Paul Carbone, 20, of Willow Street in Millburn, were killed instantly in the 11:55 p.m. crash, according to Capt. Richard Osieja.
"A preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash," he said.
Potouridis was behind the wheel of the 1994 Chevrolet Camaro and Carbone was in the passenger seat when Potouridis apparently lost control and the vehicle struck the curb in front of a truck repair company at 1463 Route 22 East, Osieja said.
He said the car then went airborne, struck a utility pole so hard it broke in half and landed upside down in a culvert along the roadway.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
