Verdict Night - Tonight we farewell Idol, Jonny Taylor
It’s all fun and games until someone loses an Idol… Tonight we farewell Jonny from Australian Idol 2008.
Sunday night’s show saw your Idols wrap the nation round their little finger with twelve powerhouse performances, as they paid homage to everyone from Maroon Five to INXS to Aerosmith. It was a beautiful day and we felt alright, without missing a thing. Now, your votes have been tallied and the journey will end tonight for one of our singers.
In this brand new verdict show, the Bottom 3 were getting ready to perform again for your votes. After the announcement of the Bottom 3, voting lines were re-opened, and you guys at home would have just 18 minutes to try and save your fave. The air was thick with nerves, pulses racing like wild horses. So let’s get back down to the facts.
The first Idol announced in the Bottom 3 was dark horse Jonny, which meant the Western Australian lad would once again be paying homage to his musical idol, Pearl Jam, and their 90s classic "Better Man". Jonny admitted that he did expect it as he didn’t feel he did the song justice last night. Backstage with Ricki-Lee, he admitted he was feeling a little emotional. Dicko added he didn’t want Jonny to compromise who he was, and that if he got through this, he would be a better performer.
The second Idol who was singing for their life was country gal, Sophie Paterson. The only girl in the Bottom 3 was back in the spotlight, paying homage to Counting Crows nostalgic rock hit, "Mr Jones". Backstage, a cheery Sophie said she felt her second time on the stage went better than last night. After performing, Sophie said she felt disappointed to be in the Bottom 3, and given the chance to be back next week she’d go for it and try to be less nervous.
Teale was the final Idol announced, as not receiving enough votes to be safe. The 22-year-old singer was once again onstage belting out Rick Price’s “Walk Away Reneeâ€, a song choice Dicko had described as odd. Backstage he said he tried to relax and enjoy the song, and he felt he did that. After performing, Teale said he had no regrets choosing Rick Price as his idol, as he was staying true to himself.Dicko felt the public got it right, while Kyle said it was obvious two of the three had used their second chance well. Marcia said last night’s show was the best show they’ve had since the first episode.
Last night you guys all voted for your fave performance in the 'Performance and a Half' competition right here on this site – who walked away with the honour? It was Chrislyn Hamilton, with Aretha Franklin’s "Think". Congratulations lady!
As Australia waited for the results, we revisited some of the standout performances from last night from the likes of Thanh, Roshani and Chrislyn, and had a sneak peek at what the first week of being the Final 12 was like.
Crunch time. As voting closed, the first Idol announced as safe was Sophie. It was down to the wire between Jonny and Teale, but tonight, the dream was over for Jonny. Stay tuned next Sunday for your Final 11 performance night!
The Final 12: Fabulous and Roaring with Passionate Energy!
Sunday night Idol served up a fabulous all-you-can-eat buffet, stuffed with tuneful treats of the tastiest kind, as your Idols sang the songs from their musical idols.
Kicking off the show was seasoned singer/songwriter Wes Carr, with the bigger-than-Texas rock ballad “Beautiful Day†by U2. Dicko said it was a terrific start, but felt that it was gratuitous for this effortless performer to have included the piano in his performance.
Next up was the youngest contestant of the show, Tom Williams, performing Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thingâ€. Kyle hit the nail on the head when he said he was getting the feeling spunky Tom was going to be very popular!
Growing up in the music-soaked town of Tamworth, Roshani Priddis has music flowing in her blood. Tonight she was cooking with gas with her version of Joss Stones’ “Tell Me About Itâ€. Kyle said she was slamming it, and he liked her edgier look – it was less Commonwealth Bank, and more rock star.
As one of six brothers, Teale Jakubenko knows a thing or two about standing out from the crowd. The talented 22-year-old was up on-stage belting out Rick Price’s “Walk Away Reneeâ€. Dicko said it was an odd choice but he was improving as a singer, and just needed more confidence.
Next we welcome to the Idol stage Miss Sophie Paterson. The blonde bombshell hails from Victoria-via-London, and tonight the country gal was up onstage with the Counting Crows’ nostalgic rock hit, “Mr. Jonesâ€. Dicko said that slow, sexy and moody was more her style of performance, while Marcia said she liked her funkier.
Hailing from country NSW was Australia’s favourite sheep-shearer-turned-muso, Luke Dickens, raising the roof with Joe Cocker’s “Feeling Alrightâ€. Marcia said it was good to see someone up there moving, while Kyle said he loved his ruggedness: ten outta ten.
Brooke Addamo is living every girl’s dream as one of your Final 12, and tonight the 17-year-old songbird showed us she had what it takes with Natasha Bedingfield’s “These Wordsâ€. Kyle wasn’t sure she gave it the same magic as the original while Dicko said she had one of the best voices in the competition.
Up next was the hard-working Thanh Bui, with Maroon Five’s groove-laced pop hit “This Loveâ€. Kyle said the ex-boy band singer’s performance was like something out of Adam Sandler film: the Idol version of Blue Steele.
Miss Madam Parker upped the fabulous factor as the sizzling hot soul singer got the party started with Ne-Yo’s super-cool hit “Closerâ€. This standout performance had the judges in agreement: absolute gold, just fantastic – she was on fire!
Western Australia’s Jonny Taylor was paying homage to his musical idol, Pearl Jam, and their grunge anthem “Better Manâ€. Marcia said he needed to learn to work his nerves, while Dicko said he had a real intensity, but he had to learn to cut free.
Seventeen-year-old schoolgirl Chrislyn Hamilton was in her element with Aretha Franklin’s soul hit “Thinkâ€, and it had the judges on their feet and cheering for more – and in a 2008 Idol first, Kyle gave the energetic performance a TOUCHDOWN!
Finishing up tonight’s incredible two-hour musical megamix was the charismatic Mark Spano. The charming labourer turned rock star closed the show in fine style with INXS’ classic “Never Tear Us Apartâ€. Dicko said it was a fantastic way to end the show, and that Mark was masculine, sexy, dangerous and cheeky, while Kyle said he was the real deal.
American Idol winner Jordin Sparks Performs on Oz Idol!
Monday night's Verdict show was an edge-of-your-seat rollercoaster, as we bid farewell to Jonny, and played host to the winner of American Idol, Jordin Sparks!
If the Final 12 needs any reminder of the many doors winning Idol can open, they need look no further than Jordin herself. The talented singer broke into the music industry at the age of 17, and was the youngest ever winner of American Idol when she picked up the crown in 2007. Following this victory, Jordin had no trouble establishing herself as a star on the rise, both in the States and all around the world. Following the success of her debut single "Tattoo", Jordin continued her chart-topping frenzy; with her smash hit "No Air", hitting Number One both here in Australia, and across the world. With the release of her infectious new single “One Step at a Timeâ€, the inspirational Ms Sparks is set to continue heating up the charts around the planet.
Showcasing an amazing vocal ability and stage presence beyond her years, Jordin rocked the Oz Idol stage and is also planning to spend time with our home-grown Idols, to give them insight into the journey that lies ahead. This is Jordin’s first trip down under, something of a teaser before she returns to tour with Alicia Keys (woo-hoo!).
