I used to sing in a band called empirestate which played loads of gigs in the city. places like the flapper and firkin x 4, the jug of ale, the bar acadamy x 2, the medicine bar, the market tavern, the actress and bishop x 3......etc
A review of my old band in media assassin is below......not bad i'd say
Empire State -The Flapper and Firkin 26/11/05
Despite being on first there's a good sized crowd at the Flapper and right from the start Empire State put in a lot of energy in and give it 100%. Sounding like a cross between Foo Fighters and a tame version of Nirvana the band play a lot of heavy rock and fast punk songs. This lazy comparison is made all the more obvious with the furious drumming that gives the impression Dave Grohl is in the room. Add to this some good bass lines and it gives the guitars a chance to really do something extra. For the most part though, both guitarists stick to a steady rhythm style. There is the odd variation, but this could be used much more to make certain songs stand out. They get away with keeping the set from sounding too similar when they throw in a token slow song that goes down well with the appreciative crowd. The vocals are clear but a bit repetitive and too obvious at times. Backing vocals could be used to make them more interesting, as well as help them stand out. The band go out on a dull note with a quick punk song and head off stage. Overall Empire State are a good band but they need to widen their influences and experiment a bit more in order to stand out and make people take notice. Ben Russell
I have taken the criticism on board and am changing the bands direction and including a lead guitarist and backing vocals from pete who also plays bass ( i hope cos hes actually pretty darn gud)I still have contacts for the venues i mentioned so gigging wont be a problem.
I use a fender telecaster and a marshall stack mode4, and i sing using my voice!!
