About Me

The guitar was Ryan Goulds first love, which he began playing in the late 1980s in his Philadelphia, Pennsylvania home. He quickly became a member of several metal and punk rock bands in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the Philadelphia area.
After completing his tour of duty with the United States Marine Corps, Ryan began playing double bass and joined a bluegrass-punk band, the J. P. Daniels band, which developed a substantial underground following in the Northeastern United States. It is during this period that Ryan entered into a traditional Irish Pipe tutelage with the legendary Irish Piper Roy Rogers.
Exposure to the music of the Asylum Street Spankers, who regularly traveled through Pennsylvania, ignited a love of traditional jazz in Ryan. This love inspired Ryan to relocate to Austin in 1999 and devote his full energies to its study.
Ryan regularly presents Giant City for patriotic performances honoring national military observances concerning the USMC.
In addition being a founding member of the acclaimed Les Niglos, Paris 49, and Shorty Long, Ryan plays with such Austin luminaries as Dave Leroy Biller, Erik Hokkanen, Floyd Domino, Danny Levin, and Wayne The Train Hancock.
Although he is best known for his string bass playing and vocal work, Ryan is also adept on the ukulele and guitar. In his playing, Ryan salutes the rhythmic voracity of Milt Hinton and Pops Foster in combination with the melodic influences of Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, and Willie The Lion Smith, among other jazz luminaries.
Not limited strictly to jazz performances, Ryan's innate and balanced sense of music makes him comfortable in many musical genres and is regularly engaged in studio work including rockabilly, bluegrass, Irish, rap, and childrens educational music.
