Hey you! The entertainment industry is all about networking. What are you about? Join us on our continuous entertainment industry odyssey no matter where you are. . .
John 'Bruva JC' Conley is a successful businessman and owner of Step ONE of Dallas Entertainment, which includes Dallas Urban Sound Magazine, Big Bruva Records, FACA Modeling, FCG Modeling, PlayazWeb, and other brands. www.samsona.com for more info on the "Road to the Runway" project series and other projects where we're looking for talent.
As the first 3 volumes of our mix CD will show, our uniqueness comes from our willingness to make fun of ourselves and the stereotypes in hip hop, including the mythical gangsta, the pimp and ho metaphor, while at times bringin’ the hard core realities of the streets. The executive producer, Bruva JC, is deeply schooled in the history of hip hop, being a first generation G, as well as having formal training in jazz and orchestra, so he knows how to mix silky strings to make ya think of classy things, as well as bringin’ in a li’l sax and brass in order to wax that ass – the wax being a symbol for bringing the music to the public. In our lyrics, no subject matter is untouched. We can go from having summer fun in our songs, to bringin’ the heat of the skreets in ya ear. There’s even one upcoming song that pokes fun at girlfriends and wives who question the closeness of her man’s friend and lifelong homey. There’s another song that romanticizes the urban love thang between a sista in the hood and a brotha in the uppity parts of the city. A key part of our strategic marketing plan is to help the oppressed win the “PR war” as minorities are often a victim of negative images coming out of urban music. Being born and raised in South Central LA. Bruva JC knows firsthand that there is nothing glorious about the gangsta life, but at the same time, he is more focused on improving the public relations image of minorities as opposed to “preaching” about the bad PR spin that much of urban music is doing to the ‘hood. The best form of giving back to the community is helping to rebuild the self-worth of those trapped in the ‘hood, in addition to spiritual, academic and economic empowerment.
In short, our unique flavor is based on our scenario based content, as opposed to just merely singing and rapping about disassociated, unoriginal topics that have been repeated over and over and over again. Bruva JC pushes his artists and songwriters to reach their zenith in taking urban and pop music to the next level as we firmly establish a network among aspiring entertainers in Dallas and other major cities in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere.
Why do we call ourselves “Step ONE of Dallas™”? Ah, now that is a damn good question. The entertainment conglomerate was started by John ‘Bruva JC’ Conley in Feb 2002 in part to help bring pop and urban entertainment into the 21st century by providing a more organized base, centered on the internet, to help talented, aspiring musicians make a collective noise that can be heard beyond the streets, beyond the local radio station, into the new digital realities. Pop entertainment, particularly hip hop, has a powerful influence across the world. Even people in Middle Eastern countries find themselves uttering famous rap lyrics in some of the most conservative spots on earth. Now that’s power. We’d like to do our part to help use hip hop to bring some truly needed edgy, positive strength to those seeking the truth – this is the first step in helping them down a strong path to a productive life. Hence, Step ONE. Also, there is a Step TWO of Dallas™ that is geared towards contemporary, edgy, urban gospel. Not the old skool gospel of days long ago, but Dallas Urban Gospel, scenario based, that makes ya think as ya nod ya head, and does not get into being preachy and corny and boring. We figured that Step ONE would reach the world through urban/pop entertainment in the first step, then if they want to get hooked into the spirituals, they can get that spirit on in the next step. All music is produced, published and distributed as part of Big Bruva Records™/Big Bruva Publishing.
The music alone does not go far enough in helping the neighborhoods we’re in, or the aspiring entertainers who look to entertainment as way out of their present situation. They need to connect with their fans in an intimate, close-up, no holds barred way. So Bruva JC started Dallas Urban Sound Magazine™ in September 2003 as an .., techno-savvy and sophisticated publishing medium to bring out the real, gritty, personal stories of indie artists, particularly those who are doing big things. For instance, we interview George “G Lo” Lopez in 2004 long before his popular group DSR got signed by Universal Records in one of the most lucrative hip hop record deals in Texas hip hop history. We interviewed Pikahsso before his dynamic trio, PPT, go voted as the Dallas Mavericks’s 2006 playoff anthem song. We interviewed Tru Praise in Houston who have been very influential in promoting and distributing holy hip hop music across the country. We’ve interview entertainment industry attorneys, world selling authors, and others, and from this mix of influential and soon-to-be-influential local celebs, every one of our interviewees benefits from the well-organized exposure of Dallas Urban Sound Magazine™. Look for the most ground breaking interviews of our Big Bruva Records™ artists DirtE Bird (rapper), Kenyan (singer), Mindy (singer), Ballistic D (generic rapper), and others.
How does the modeling fit in? In the Summer of 2004, Bruva JC noticed that models in cities outside New York and Los Angeles had a tough time like indie musicians in getting noticed. The typical pattern is, if a model did not get accidentally discovered in their hometown, they had to move to the major modeling capitals of the world to increase their chances of getting noticed. So FACA Modeling™, with its emphasis on presenting a multi-talented, positive image of woman, was formed to help bring the modeling world into the 21st century via the new digital realities. Selected models can make organized noise and spread the word very rapidly, thus bringing much needed attention. Alone, each individual model cannot afford to turn heads in the industry in their own cities, so it is necessary to work together on a larger, grassroots scale. We help with that. FCG Modeling™ for men has the same goals for men as FACA Modeling for women. PlayazWeb Models™ is the next level above FACA and FCG Modeling and is very selective as it will be closely tied to our upscale lifestyles of wealth section of the website (PlayazWeb.com, LifestylesOfWealth.com). Plus, models and musicians need each other for various common projects, so not only do our music video projects make this collabo happen, but also our events. Thus, we bring the .. world in sync with the offline world in a 21st century marriage that enhances the chances of aspiring entertainers in our network making organized noise. And the industry is taking notice. We’ve been contact by various players in the modeling and music industry who have taken note of our models, musicians, our website/business plan, and especially our events.
Why PlayazWeb™? Over the years, we’ve noticed that our growing number of website visitors contained a demographic that skewed affluent in the 25-49 year old age group. Many of them being college educated, we began to take notice of them as we evolved our business plan. The slogan, “work slavishly, live lavishly,” was born out of the fact that our more affluent, astute visitors, particularly in the U.S., work very hard, smart and long hours, building up wealth, yet not having enough time to properly plan their recreation and spending patterns. This interesting state is particularly true of the “nouveau riche” who have just acquired new wealth as the economy ebbs and flows. So PlayazWeb was created in 2005 to meet the unique needs of this segment of our network. So look for sub brands under the PlayazWeb banner to bring it all home: PlayazWebTV™, PlayazWeb Pictures™, and PlayazWeb Models™.
Members of our network are in the U.S. and North America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The next version of our website will make all of these important developments more apparent and detailed.

Making Money at Our Events
We do events in order to help artists and models connect with the public in a united way. Since the Texas urban scene is still up and coming (like many other major urban areas around the world), it is not easy to make money when we are solely dedicated to helping independent artists. as you can imagine, if we pay, say, $8,000 to bring a well known artists to an event, then that name attracts people who collectively would likely bring in $10,000 or so (as an example), leaving a profit (less other event overhead). But our artists don't have the kind of name recognition that brings paying people to our events, so we have to spend a good deal of money and time to get people to come out on your behalf. sometimes we break even, sometimes we net a little profit after expenses, but sometimes we lose a little, too. Samsona Corporation is a sponsor of ours, so we can absorb those cases where we lose a little.
we don't mind doing a deal where we pay artists a percentage of money for paying fans they attract on their own. for you, you're mainly focused on spreading your brand at minimal cost (and hopefully make a profit). but again, Texas is not quite Cali or New York, so it is still an effort to condition the public to want to pay money for up and coming artists without a strong name recognition or regular radio play. our goal is to help make Texas a better, more profitable network for all indie artists.
