I was asked to lead, and conduct the conference choir for the UCC conference in May of '06. I was given only 3.5 hrs to teach 2 new songs. We did it! We had a fabulous time not only during practice, but also in the worship service! Thank you UCC! To God be the glory! Breaking bread together with our friends following a UCC conference service at Asilomar ~ May 2006.(from L to R: Rev. He is also very particular about which park we should go to. As long as his bigger brothers are o.k with the plan, I'm game! So here we are at a public park on Hearst St. @ Berkeley. Since there has been a steady flow of incoming Samoan students from both Samoas to PSR, we've had the pleasure of gathering in our backyard at the beginning/ending of each semester to simply BBQ (I believe it's safe to say that...hahah!). We tend to linger on a bit longer (than we should) throughout the night, but that's because there is a precious need to reminisce the natural beauty of one of the purest elements of our Samoan heritage (that which makes us a unique people) ~ MUSIKA SAMOA!! I especially find fulfillment in taking advantage of Rev. Fuamai's guitar accompaniments and musical skills, and also the natural musical talents of all the A'oa'os and their faletuas. And when the Revrend strums on, I do my part by harmonizing as best as I know how to ~ with, or without the lyrics...(winks!) I tell you there is nothing that is as satisfying as having a party where everyone knows the same music, shares the same harmonies, appreciates good laughter, and whips up the most delicious, and improvised dishes. These are the moments that have helped me not only to recapture, but also to relive the great memories that I treasure of my Samoa. What's for sure is that there is always lots for the "taking home." The Samoan term for that is an oxy-moron: AIGA BASKET!....hahahahahaha! Pardon me for deviating a bit, but I just had to add that on...hahahahah!!! After all, WE ARE A HAPPY PEOPLE!
