Oakland man shot in face dies; cops search for gunman Victim slain outside girlfriend's home on Market Street , FROM STAFF REPORTS Article Last Updated: 12/27/2007 08:45:08 AM PSTOAKLAND — A 20-year-old man shot in the face Tuesday night outside the West Oakland home of his girlfriend's relative died Wednesday. The man police identified as Byron Winston (phatal p of the stick up kidz), an apprentice construction worker, had recently moved to North Oakland from San Francisco.Sgt. George Phillips said Winston was definitely the gunman's intended target but so far police have no motive and no arrests have been made.Winston was shot about5:35 p.m. Tuesday in the 2300 block of Market Street after returning from visiting his father in Berkeley, Phillips said.He was taken to a local hospital, where he remained on life support until Wednesday. Phillips said Winston and his pregnant girlfriend had been visiting her relatives earlier in the day and he brought food from that gathering to his father.He had just returned to the relative's home and parked his car when he was shot, apparently by someone in a passing car, police said.Phillips said Winston's girlfriend and members of his family told investigators they didn't think Winston had problems with anyone.Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to$10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the gunman.
