Musically, X-Rated Porno Machine throws a lot of diverse sounds your way. Pieces of everything from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pantera and Mudvayne to Faith No More and Staind were on display, among a bunch of others. The band’s lead guitar player is particularly adept, reeling off quick riffs and mixing up his sound quite a bit with different effects and playing styles. The focal points, however, are the two female lead singers, who don’t harmonize separate parts as much as they join together in the same range to add an extra punch to their sound. One will drop out and give the lead vocals to the other, while at other points they’ll sing in tandem. The end result is very solid and a little bit different.Rolling through a set that included songs like “Heartbreaker†as well as favorite “Mr. President,†X-Rated Porno Machine pumped up the crowd- especially one guy up front who was dragged onstage and put through the paces by one of the ladies on lead vocals. Being slapped with a belt, having his pants undone, getting sat on, caressed and all-around fondled – Oh, the humanity! Who knows how he’ll ever recover.Powerslave 6/11/05
Vocalist Angela Castro has a Gwen Stefani-like range and sound, minus the warble that Stefani does. The second frontwoman, Clarice Gjers, brings a soulful alto compliment to Castro's high range. The men of the band are solid musicians. There is a ska/reggae undercurrent to the band that would probably work nicely on a bill with locals 5 Days Dirty. The reggae quality caused X-Rated Porno Machine to sound somewhat "lighter" than some of the other bands in the lineup; however the guitar lines still are rather heavy for a reggae-influenced band, heavier than Sublime, anyway.Powerslave 6/16/05
X-Rated Porno Machine tested the waters with a vibrant display of girl/girl vocal action. Clarice Gjers and Angie Casto traded off on vocals periodically throughout each song, providing a slinky, sexy undertone (“Heart Breaker,†“Too Farâ€), while Aaron McCoy manipulated the guitar to mirror the vocals, bringing forth a life of its own. The painted duo of Chistopher Cullen (bass) and Mark Balesteri (drums) capably anchored the band… not standing out, per se, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The girls also had vicious tongues and paid a harsh homage to American politics with “Mr. President,†a grittier display of punk-rock rankle, resplendent with intertwining guitar and bass lines that meshed into a dizzying oblivion. They teetered into the fetish realm with “Slave†and encouraged audience boot-licking participation. Their respective “slaves†played their parts well, as they were lavished with demeaning attention. They concluded their set with the anthemic “Fuck You,†which ironically, was a common theme and further demanded attention and crowd action.
