Young ScollaClass is in session. Are you listening? Next up in the Mid-West role call is Young Scolla. Born in South Memphis, Tennessee, Scolla was moved to the Michigan, Highland Park area at the age of six. Born with a early blooming talent, the young Scolla got his start in music appropriately, in elementary school. Blessed with the ability to sing and dance, he added rap to his repertoire in middle school. Since then he has been connected to and seen the birth of over twenty different talented artists and multiple collaborative unions. His earliest experience rapping was with his friends Will Grinden and Willy J. Peso, and cousin Truth Da Anomoly.Truth receiving the kudos for getting him serious about his craft assisted in the formation of Da Aristacratz. This later evolved into a production team and left room for Scolla and partner Ale Blade to form Blood Sport ENT in 2003. Blood Sports first mixtape was well underway while Scolla was still in high school and continued to gain momentum as a freshman effort. The mixtape entitled, "Mic Killaz Vol.1" sold a total of 500 plus copies locally. Things went smooth until Ale left the label in between 2003-04. "Everyone is there own man and makes there own decisions. I have no beef with anyone", Scolla comments. Entering 2005, Scolla moved to Mississippi with family and let his business mind flourish by helping to start Blood Sport South. After spending more than a full year in the south, he returned to Michigan to help to move 700 plus units of "Mic Killaz Vol.2".In 2007, he solidified his business goals and helped the artists around him become more independent. By this time, J Peso branched off with three other artists and formed H&M Block Records. There was slight tension but nothing serious. Scolla continued with his positive progress and signed new talent to the label; Johnny King (now President of Bloodsport) and Mitch Boston.Scolla's track record gives him a strong range of experience. He has done the local shows and talent showcases as well as the "School to School Tour" with singer Katrina Carson, in addition to opening up for local big faces such as Big Herk and Quest McCody.Reminiscent of the early Jay-Z and Nas era, but still wise enough to see the change in the times, thinks of himself as a 'Combination Rapper.' "I feel I can make the popular music of today and still say something with it." When asked about his outlook on the rap game in general he had this to say:"There's been a lot of controversy over the Hip-Hop is Dead campaign. I say Hip-Hop is in a coma. Not to knock any music that's coming out but there is a over saturation. No depth in the music anymore. People aren't saying much. Until there is a balance, rap is going into a pit fall..."Scolla's passionate and realistic approach to his music is what gives him his edge and motivation. He uses his music to uplift and inspire the environment in which he grew up in. Family loss has solidified his no non-sense attitude towards his career and he stresses that with everyone in his camp. The motto for the umbrella organization his camp, the United Street Regime, "Get Right or Get Left" is a testament to his crews seriousness and tenacity. With a unit the rivals the pros under his guide, Scolla prepares to face off against his greatest challenge yet... Mainstream music...The first single "Yup (Get Money)" is the laid back club track, strictly for the hustlaz and "Fall Back (Mid-West Anthem)" ft. B-Lyn and produced by Chrisis is the harder follow up to look out for. Each demonstrates his lyrical ability and intelligent swagger. "Im here to let them know its a movement. We are coming with drive, talent, and energy that no one else has. We got something to say and we're coming to say it! We tryna dominate...". Nonchalant about his position as artist, manager, and general of Blood Sport Ent, the Young Scolla aka Grand Sir Tha Hustla, is ready to head back to class this Fall. But this time, he's giving out the lesson, and its in Hip-Hop 101...Interview By Hugo Biggs (Irvin)
