About Me
Kara Bowers a.k.a. KB the Boo Bonic might look like your typical 23 year- old woman upon first glance, but looks can be deceiving. This unlikely lyricist has been exploring the art of rapping and music as a whole for as long as she can remember. Her diverse list of influences include: UGK, Chamillionaire, Geto Boys, Z-ro, Tupac, Sublime, Eminem, Dr. Dre, AC/DC, Scarface, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Lauryn Hill, The Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Bob Marley, Westside Connection, Bone Thugs N Harmony and Atmosphere, to name a few.
She was born and raised in and around Houston, Texas. She grew up in Humble, a small town in the greater Houston area, as an only child. Her parents divorced when she was in second grade, and she maintained a close bond with her hardworking, single mom. She developed a love for rap music at a young age when she bought her first rap album, Notorious B.I.G.'s Life After Death. Mom always tried to keep a morally upstanding household so the CD was edited. The tracks, such as The Ten -- Commandments, may not have made complete sense, but she knew she liked the storyteller’s smooth flow and confidence.
KB got her first taste for performing in her early high school years. She went from being a freshman cheerleader to the junior who was known for being a wild child and getting the party hyped. Although she got away with a lot using her seemingly innocent appearance, she was ready to escape all the rules and restrictions of high school and graduated early her junior year. Meanwhile, her predominately male crew at the time shared her passion for hip hop and rap, so time spent kicking it and smoke sessions frequently turned into freestyle sessions. KB eventually got tired of sitting on the sidelines and decided to grab the mic. It could've been the booze or the blunts, but she mustered up the confidence and spit. The lines were simple, and it only lasted a minute or two, but the response was good. Her boys were suprised by the normally reserved KB's verse and gave due props. That night made her want to begin writing, flex her creative and lyrical muscles and get in that spotlight again. Throughout high school she continued to freestyle when the chance presented itself and gained confidence, as well as skills, on the mic. She remained an almost constant presence in the local party scene due to her business ventures at the time and her, well, love of partying. She earned a rep as "the little white chick who can rap" by freestyling at house parties, clubs, parking lots and pretty much anywhere there was a beat while she continued to fill rhyme books and conjure up ideas for songs.
KB went on to attend the University of Texas in Austin, the live music capital of the world. It was there that she had her first onstage experiences and decided where her college career was headed. Writing had always been something that she was proficient in and enjoyed, hence the passion and interest in the use of lyrics and rhymes, so it only seemed logical that print journalism would be an ideal major. While working toward her degree she met some local musicians in a band called Full Service, who played frequent gigs on weekends at various spots on 6th Street. They invited her to get up on stage to kick a freestyle one night and, and wrecked the funky rock/reggae beat supplied by the band. She continued to hone her on-stage presence by frequently doing guest appearances with the band.
She relocated to San Marcos where she finished out her college career but continued to work on her music. As she started to record tracks and book entire sets, her live performance experience included regular spots at venues in San Marcos and San Antonio including: Gil’s Broiler, Lucy’s, Cat’s Billiards, Gordo’s, The Hot Spot and The Boss Bar. After graduating from Texas State University with a degree in mass communication and a business minor in Fall 2007, KB has moved back to Austin and is soon to be releasing her anticipated first album- Predator. Her first single “Click Clack†has already been featured in the independent film “On Impulseâ€. She is currently booking shows to promote its release and preparing to shop it to labels for distribution and representation.
KB feeds off of the shock value that her presence and rhymes deliver every time she performs. The pretty, preppy exterior is juxtaposed to her rhyming abilities and style, but she is certainly no gimmick or novelty act. This serious MC feels that being on stage and rapping is the most natural and therapeutic place to be. She hopes that her music can serve as a way to show people that they can and should do whatever they want to if it makes them happy and enriches their lives, especially young women. KB says that what excites her most is her certainty that her unique style, passion, lyricism and bold confidence destine her to create a enormous buzz in the industry, and the funniest part is, they’ll never see it coming.
