Music, guitar playing, skydiving, cooking. Music business, computers, politics, history, science, language. Islay Scotches, Kentucky bourbons, Bavarian beers! Quirky bars, museums, art I don't understand, sucking at billiards or bowling, people watching. Digging my toes in the sand. Learning something new.
People who are deeper than what they watch or who they listen to.
I like a wide range of music. But my favorites possess certain attributes:
Phenomenal guitar playing, e.g., Greg Koch, Willy Porter, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Jerry Reed, Jedd Huges, Chet Atkins, ZZ Top, Van Halen, SRV, B.B. King, Albert King, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, King Crimson, Yngwie Malmsteen.
Incredible songwriting, e.g., The Beatles, Queen, Maroon 5, Dire Straits, Tom Petty, the Cranberries, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Tom Waits, Ani Difranco, Jim Croce, Hugh Prestwood, Dean Dillon, Kostas.
or Unique voices e.g., Gary Allan, Dwight Yoakum, Rachel Proctor, Randy Travis, Garth Brooks, Stephen Tyler, Janis Joplin, Ozzy, Norah Jones, Alison Krauss.
On rare occasions you find someone who meets all three. Talented bastards like Brad Paisley. I always have room in my stereo for those people.
Thank You For Smoking, The Big Lebowski, Pirates of the Carribean, The ORIGINAL Star Wars Trilogy, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Serenity, The Incredibles, Tombstone (You're a daisy if you do!), Big Trouble in Little China, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Deadly China Hero. Wait, make that all things Kung Fu.
I don't really watch it much. Occasionally Family Guy or Colbert Report.
Recently: "Deep Economy" by Bill McKibben, "The 13 1/2 lives of Captain Bluebear" by Walter Moers, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by J.K. Rowling, "Sorrows of Empire" by Chalmers Johnson, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie, and "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking.
Christopher Reeve - you'll always be super, man.
