May 26, the day the world changed forever...

About Me

So, you wanna know about me? Well, I’m much too complex to be summed up in a tidy paragraph so this is long, but worth it.
First and foremost, I am a woman of God. That doesn’t mean I think I’m holier or better than anybody, but it does mean that I’m anointed. It doesn’t mean that I’m perfect or anything close, but it does mean that I am forgiven, and that I’m growing every single day. It means that I am living my life according to GOD’s standards as best I can, and I have been renewed by the transformation of my mind. It means my life is not lived for myself but for God and that my rewards are infinitely more profound than anything that can be given to me by a mortal. In short, it means I’m DIVINE.
I’m a happy, energetic person. It’s tough to catch me upset or sad because I don’t believe in worrying nor do I believe in putting emotional energy into things I can’t control. That doesn’t mean I ignore my feelings or pretend things away…it just means I’ve found healthy ways to deal with the ebb and flow of life. I typically get more done in a day than most get done in a week. I don’t eat the bread of idleness. I’m a centered, well-adjusted woman who lives purposefully and abundantly. I love to meet new people and develop healthy, safe relationships. I have learned what makes me happy and now I live in a place of fulfillment. I don’t “need” anything from anybody that God or I cannot give myself. I’m closer to self-actualization than ever before.
I play hard, and I work hard. I often get up before the sun rises and set about the day’s tasks. I plan my work and work my plan but not before spending time in prayer and meditation. I’m very spiritual so taking time to nourish my spirit and replenish my soul is of the utmost importance. Balance is key in my life.
I’m a writer chick. I write day and night, and there’s nothing more therapeutic and wonderful than writing. I love to act/direct/produce, but WRITING takes the cake, hands down. It’s rare that I go more than 36 hours without writing. I’m quite creative and imaginative. I’d like to eventually do some contributing to my favorite mags, but for now, I’ll focus on the release of my first book (Yay! Stay tuned...), my screenplays, and other freelance writing assignments.
I live for travel. Traveling is life…there’s no other experience that can be as transformative as quickly as a trip to some place you’ve never been. I love to go, see, and do so I’m always dreaming up ways to escape…even if it’s to the next state over. I don’t get to travel as often as I’d like because my career requires that I be in Los Angeles most of the time, but when I get a chance, I’m on Expedia scheming on an escape.
I’m smart as all outdoors. I’m a bright chick…I read like it’s going out of style, and I did very well in school. I’m business savvy, and I’m intelligent. I’m insatiably curious, and I feed my mind regularly with knowledge that will further my causes. I’m a fabulous dork…I’ll sit at my desk and read Entrepreneur magazine or Smart Money magazine while my toenail polish dries or I’ll deep condition my tresses while reading up on foreign affairs like the New People’s Army in the Philippines. That means I’ve got a maxed out IRA and the new Dolce & Gabbana fragrance. It says that I can spot legal issues surrounding international business, and I can apply a full face of makeup in less than 8 minutes. Basically, it means I’m FLY.
I’m SILLY…I am forever giggling and making myself & others laugh. I know when to be serious and handle business, but I’m quite genial and spirited. I love to play and frolic, and I allow my type A side to do the math while my type B side dreams up the possibilities.
I have ultra feminine tendencies. I like to have my nails painted, I have more lip gloss than the law should allow, and I love cooking and decorating. I like it when men do manly things because it frees me up to do more ladylike stuff.
My Yorkie, Seneca, is the bestest, most wonderful pup on the planet…yes, even better than your dog. She is playful, energetic, cute, and a little sassy. She gets it from her momma!
I’m goal-oriented and UNSTOPPABLE. When I decide to do something, you may as well consider it done because I will pursue the goal relentlessly until it’s checked off of my “To do” list. I don’t hold myself or others to unreasonable expectations of perfection, but I do maintain a standard of excellence in everything that I do. I believe in persevering and not quitting until my goals are attained.
I am borderline OCD with my organization – my closet is sized, colorized (ROY G. BIV) and organized by things like sleeve length/pant length. I don’t like for my food to touch on a plate, and I don’t like using dishwater. I have the tendencies of a grammar Nazi, and I hate loud music. I always detangle the left side of my hair first, and I hate when people don’t return phone calls/texts/emails within 24 hours.
My tolerance for games and okey doke is lower than the average. I hate being lied to, manipulated, and played with. I’m annoyed by flakes and people who don’t keep their word. I’m slightly siddity, but I’m not stuck up or off putting. I’m a positive person (for real), and I very much believe in the power of positive thinking, intention, and vision. I plan almost everything ahead, but I stay flexible and spontaneous. I am generous and accommodating, but I hate being exploited. I’m terribly patient and very forgiving, but I keep the peace in my life like a Buddhist so people who disturb that peace quickly get dismissed as do those who are negative, dishonest, ambivalent, unmotivated, lewd, or just plain mean. I surround myself with people who will make me better and bring out the best in me. I believe in the Law of Association so I put friendships and relationships under a microscope to be sure I’m getting the most bang for my emotional buck. This has left me with few friends, but the quality of my friends has improved exponentially. I absolutely love the people in my “circle.” It’s better to be alone than in the wrong company….for real.
I believe in eating organic and natural whenever possible, and I believe in reducing my carbon footprint to help save the environment. Yes, I’m one of those “healthy people.” Heck, my favorite color is GREEN. Some of my CLOTHES are organic, ok? I believe in healing myself naturally instead of taking fiftyleven (yes, fiftyleven) prescriptions to treat symptoms that in turn require more meds to treat the side effects. I say eat well, exercise, think positively, and live purposefully, and you’re much less likely to be ridden with disease and ailment. I’m living proof!
I can NOT live without: my study Bible, my Blackberry, C.O. Bigelow lip gloss, organic green tea, my Jilbere de Paris shower comb, at least 4 different perfumes, and organic fruit snacks.
Of course, there’s more, but that’s the super condensed, abridged, Cliff’s Notes version of ME. Any questions?

My Interests

My interests are endless. I have an insatiable hunger for experiencing life so I’m always looking for an adventure…or something to keep me entertained.

I love going to the opera. The LA Opera’s La Boheme is one of my all time favorites. I’ve been trying to get over to see the LA Philharmonic because I hear it’s nice.

I love being near the water so I like to take trips to the beach to write or sit and think. I want to go scuba diving down in Florida someday so I’m interested in marine life and aquatics.

I have a decent stamp collection that I’d like to spend more time working on this year.

I’m taking up oil painting this fall, and I’m learning Japanese in preparation for a big trip scheduled for 2009. I’m also interested in anthropology and travel.

I’m interested in PEOPLE…the complexities that make us all who we are. Of course, I’m interested in film & television production. I’m also interested in books –lots and lots of good books.

I enjoy shopping on occasion, but beauty & fashion could be considered interests of mine. My HAIR is certainly an interest of its own. Between pre-shampooing, shampooing, no-shampooing, conditioner washing, deep conditioning, rollersetting, flat ironing, airdrying, braidout-ing, detangling, finger-combing and so forth and so on, well, you can see how it can be a hobby all by itself. And yes, the hair you see is ALL mine…homegrown in the humidity of Alabama summers.

I’m interested in technology because I don’t know much about it, but I want to learn. I can pay bills online, surf the web on my Blackberry, and empty the recycle bin on my PC, but other stuff leaves me bewildered.

I’m interested in real estate, investing, and wealth creation. I’ve got a maxed out IRA (Go me!) and a couple of money market accounts so I’d like to invest in other vehicles that will insure my early retirement. I’m actively saving for my first real estate purchase, and I’m always studying up on the best performing mutual funds.

I love doing sudoku puzzles. They’re like a mental cigarette for me. I just mellow out when I’m doing them. I don’t guess that’s an interest, but I like doing ‘em.

Ok, I think that’s enough. I’m interested in a lot of stuff.

I'd like to meet:

I’m an open-minded and friendly lady...I LOVE making new friends so I’d like to meet a variety of people. I’m particularly fascinated with...
~writers
~artists (actors, directors, painters, sculptors, dancers, etc)
~thinkers
~sarcastic people
~outgoing people
~people who have insatiable thirst for knowledge
~people who like to read
~people who are confident
~people who will make me laugh
~Geminis who have learned to balance the struggle between being type A and type B simultaneously
~people with the intellectual capacity to appreciate who I am...

I believe that experience is life’s best teacher and as such, there’s a lesson to be learned from every person in life. I like people who are intelligent, ambitious, and motivated...I also adore a great sense of humor although my humor can be a little dark at times.

I am a social butterfly. I absolutely love meeting new people and getting acquainted, however, I do have standards, and I am particular about the company I keep. Come correct or don’t come at all!!!

Music:

I’ve really grown more selective about the music I listen to because I don’t believe in feeding my mind with trash. Garbage in, garbage out is not just some line my 6th grade English teacher was saying to annoy me. It’s true. So, I listen to a wide variety of stuff, but I have boundaries.

Jazz & classical are probably my favorites. I also love good gospel music. I like Fred Hammond, and I really like Mary Mary. I like Hezekiah Walker, Tonex, and CeCe Winans. I like a lot of R&B from the ‘90s so I like 702, Xscape, TLC, SWV, Changing Faces, and pre-2000 Destiny’s Child. I love Anita Baker, Shania Twain, Hall & Oats, John Mayer, and Faith Evans. I like a little Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, and India. Arie. I used to be a die hard Jay-Z fan, but I had to let all that go because it was not consistent with my belief system nor did it promote things I wanted seeping into my subconscious. I can still quote most of his songs, but you won’t catch me bumping it in my car. I’m too old to be claiming I listen to music “for the beat”…I know better. A repetitive message WILL seep into your subconscious so discernment is key. My guilty pleasure is Justin Timberlake, and my un-guilty pleasure is Elton John.

Movies:

I wouldn’t call myself a film junkie, but I do enjoy a good movie. I study film as a way to learn and like everyone else, I enjoy being entertained. Some of my favorites are Coming to America, The Bourne Triology, Crash, Monster, Waiting to Exhale, Things We Lost in the Fire, Half Nelson, Clueless, The Color Purple, Soul Food, The Devil Wears Prada, She Hate Me, What About Bob?, Bee Movie, Shark Tale, and others.

Television:

I don’t watch a lot of TV because it’s rarely productive, but I do stay abreast of the scripted shows because it’s important to my career. I haven’t been as good about this in the past, but I’ve been on it this year. I love Grey’s Anatomy and Cashmere Mafia. I can’t lie; there are a few reality shows that I love. Oprah’s Big Give is perhaps my favorite show on television, period. I also love Flip This House, Miss Guided, Bridezillas, and Here Come the Newlyweds.

Books:

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to read. I can not say it enough. I plan to give my children a library of all of the wonderful books I’ll collect over my lifetime. There isn’t a better gift, in my opinion…except maybe a fat inheritance, but back to the books. Some of my favorites are The Power of Positive Thinking, More Than Enough, Financial Peace, Think & Grow Rich, Safe People, The Powermind System, Forgive for Good, More Than Enough, Don’t Set Goals The Old Way, Ten Stupid Things Women Do To Mess Up Their Lives, The Confident Woman, The Millionaire Next Door, The Four Agreements, The Richest Man in Babylon, Acting with Adler, True and False, Gather Together in My Name, Lies at the Altar, Night, Toilet Trained for Yale, And Then There Were None, The Technique of the Love Affair, Who Moved My Cheese?, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff and it’s All Small Stuff, The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands…I could go on and on and on and on. If you are not a reader, please do yourself a favor and start reading a few books a year. You will inevitably see an improvement in your life if you make the investment of acquiring knowledge and applying the knowledge.

Heroes:

My hero is my dad. He is the closest thing to perfection walking this earth, in my opinion. He has been my best friend my entire life, and I am so blessed and fortunate to have had such a wonderful man as my father. He has been there for me during the best of times and the worst of times, and he’s always supported my pursuit of my goals and dreams. He has stood by me when everyone else abandoned me, and he has been my light in the darkest of nights. He is my heart.
My female heroes include my mom, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Dr Laura Schlessinger, Shonda Rhimes, and Joyce Meyer. These women all possess traits that I would love to cultivate in myself and my life. I want to continue to grow into a woman who is not superwoman but is a Proverbs 31 woman of excellence. These women have proven that I can do many of the things I want to do without glass ceilings or limits, and they give me hope.
My other male heroes would include Dave Ramsey, Ryan Gosling, Denzel Washington, Hill Harper, and Earl Graves. These men all possess talents and traits that I believe are essential to manhood, and I believe that men like them help improve society as a whole.
