ESCAPE ESCAPE

There was a crisp chill in the air as I stood outside my house and looked around for the pulse of traffic that was normally rumbling by my street at that ridiculous time of morning. It was oddly quiet and I didn’t think people had realized it was the start of winter or that car travel was one of the warmest places to be. If your heater would allow it that it is. That was the best thing about winter, even in the older cars; nine times out of ten, if the air con didn’t work or simply didn’t exist, the heater still prevailed.
The star date was two thousand and six, and I was about to embark on a journey only myself and 5 other people would ever know. If I had one of those wonderful things called cars I’m sure that I would have been in it right at that moment, pushing my hands nearly straight through the vents in a vain attempt to get closer to the warmth of the engine. But alas, I am a musician, and live the life of one to an almost cliché effect.
With a note book in hand and not so “heat retentive” jacket, that was by the way; terribly fashionable, I remember the jacket I should have got; the jacket that was ten times cheaper, ten times warmer and had ten times more pockets in it than I would ever know what to do with. As if it was an “I told you so moment” directed at myself, a sigh left my chest, and I realized the true price of fashion. I laughed at the situation I put myself in, and wondered if it was worth it. Yes, yes it was.
That day I was going to write new material, new lyrics and meet new band mates who I had been told, played with their hearts and only had a mind for music and how it could change the lives we live. For once I was actually excited to get outside and into the cold, because that day, I got to write with other people who just wanted to enjoy playing music as much as I did.
For me it is a release. A time I can write how I feel, and get everything off my chest. A time I can encrypt metaphors, hide truths and be as honest as I can with out hurting those involved unless I wish it. To be able to do all that and still have it make sense to someone else is a dream I have forever been thankful for.
The day past quickly, and that night, we met.
As hours of talking and writing past, we left the house late into the night and realized what lay before us. That night, we had become something. A force, a being, a brethren? Call it what you will.
But from that moment on, we had escaped.
