Tom Tkacz (aka DJ Tkaczu) was born in 1991 in Warsaw. He is one of the best Polish DJ’s / Turntablist's. He represented Warsaw in the Polish IDA DJ Championships 2007. He became interested in phonograph turntables in 2004, when under the influence of hip-hop telediscs and films of DJ tournaments he developed an interest in turntablism. However his interest in hip-hop appeared much, much earlier under the influence of Polish hip-hop bands like Paktofonika, Grammatik and Kaliber 44. In 2004 he spent a lot of time helping his friends organize local Hip-Hop projects and with the money he saved up by doing this he decided to convert his room into a small recording studio. There were lots of plans but what is interesting is this, that instead of buying studio equipment Tkaczu bought his first DJ mixer - a Reloop Scratch 2. Financial problems meant he couldn’t buy any turntables yet, so to begin with he just had the mixer which sat unused on a shelf for a couple of months. In December 2005 he bought his first turntables - the cheapest available. After a couple of months of learning how to play on them he had totally mastered the basics and decided to sell his setup because it wasn’t enough for him any more. The weak engines of the turntables had very limited possibilities which didn’t allow him to practise more advanced techniques. The exchange of his old turntables for newer ones turned out to be not as easy as you would think, so Tkaczu’s skills were at a standstill for about a year. Tkaczu only equipped himself with his second setup in March 2007. From that moment he practised non-stop and in April he started putting together his own routines. Soon after that, under the influence of DJ Eprom he put in his application for the qualifying rounds of the Polish IDA DJ’s Championships 2007, which took place on 20 April in Poznan and on 21 April in Warsaw - this was the first competition of his life. He didn’t have very much time to prepare but he managed to put together all 5 of the routines that were needed to take part in the championships. His début was definitely successful: among others, he beat DJ Trakmajster – one of Poland’s leading DJ’s - and took third place in the qualifying round which allowed him to compete in the IDA 2007 Finals in Poland (he reached the semi-finals where he competed with DJ Pistolet – twice Champion of Poland and Vice Champion of Europe in beat-juggling). On 8 June Tkaczu represented Warsaw in the Finals of the IDA DJ’s Championships in Poland 2007 in the Technical category – in the end he reached 5th place. After the finals he made a huge impression on the media as a talented 16 year old DJ. His good start in the competition increased his motivation so much that Tkaczu worked to improve his skills all through the holidays, not only at home but also at many DJ lectures including the Bruk Festival 2007 in Gdynia, and Rodec Scratch College 2007 in Cracow.
At parties he usually plays Hip-Hop, R&B and Soul but sometimes you can hear a bit of Dancehall or Crunk, and everything is always ideally selected with a bit of dynamic scratching and a light dose of beat-juggling. He also has his own private DJ school in Warsaw (more information about lessons at [email protected]), and is a member of a 3 man Juggler's Crew (DJ Tkaczu, DJ Pistolet, and DJ Invent).
He has shared stages and club nights with DJ’s: Tigerstyle, Unkut, J-Bounce, Pistolet, Eprom, Falcon, Hen, Trakmajster, Krime, Daniel Drumz, Invent, Top-Cut, Kostek, Ostasz, Grubaz, Wenc, Spox, MC’s, and bands: Grammatik, Smagalaz, Mercedresu, Muflon, Flint, Rufin MC, TeTris, Krou (CpB), Cisza&Spokój, Esdwa and others…
