The Helmholtz Resonators are three musicians who have been playing and writing music together since meeting at university around the turn of the century. They studied acoustic science and the work of Hermann Helmholtz, particularly being inspired by the book 'On the wires of our nerves' which is essential reading for anyone interested in the science of sound and sound synthesis. The band, as we know it, was not formed until a few years later, when Garland Vanderbilt discovered an old Burg organ in a skip and telephoned Carlton Breezy and Chladni Plates to help with rescuing this relic. Having installed it in their studio they were thrilled to find it still, to some extent, worked...and sounded great. Around the same time Carlton had an old hyper-fuzz pedal he never liked the sound of with his guitar, so he decided to get rid of the guitar and found it was perfect with an old 1970s bass. Chladni was thrilled, he had wanted to form a psycadelic instrumental three piece band for some time and so 'LaLa' came into being with Chladni on organ, Carlton on bass and Garland on drums. All three were so excited they kept writing and swapping instruments until several tunes had been composed. They were having a lot of fun and it soon became apparent that it was infectious so they called in Vandamme Laudenkleer to record and produce a few of the pieces. The e.p 'Crystal Submarine' was taking shape, inspired by the sound of the organ, the friendship they shared and the scenery of South London.
The formula = bass + drums + organ x 3 / 3
"Fantastic, industrial, robotic Tim Burton soundtracks performed with gusto and no little glee"
"Trio of psychedelic electronic instrumentalists........... suggesting a blend of Add N To (X) and Iceland's undersung Apparat Organ Quartet"
