www.cervixwithasmile.netEmail: [email protected] With A Smile is a four piece band from Worcester, MA. they comprise of one
guitarist/vocalist, one bassist/vocalist, another bass player, and a drummer.
You read right, they have two bass players. Live with it, love it. They formed in
2004, and have played only a handful shows at our current home here in Clark
University, as theyll as quite a few off- campus gigs. Now that they have all graduated college, the time has come to regroup, find places other than
Worcester (don't get us wrong, they love the place, but they need to get out too!) to play at and wow crowds of more than 12. At least 5 of
such crowd members cannot constitute friends, well-wishers, or teeth-gritting family members. Ok, maybe 4.
Fardeen was looking around Clark University for people to join his vision of a rock n' roll band. Benjamin Jacobs was the only person to answer his call.
They jammed over sampled Breeders drumbeats and realized that this approach would not pan out for long.
Nicholas Hoffman was and is a metal bassist, and was looking for a band to simply jam with, because the boy needed to PLAY. Ben and Fardeen were
contemplating getting a real, live drummer instead, but the thought of having a second bassist was interesting at best. The pop rock formula
only weren't so far, and the addition of a second bass dynamic presented a nice challenge, so they decided - why not? Soon, however, they
realized that avant-garde was a dead scene, and a real, live drummer was still very much a dream and an aspiration.
Along came Gabriella Volante. Having played for 7+ years, with a great fondness for many genres of music, especially the drum stylings of one
Neil Peart (yes, take notice!), Gabriella was a friend of the band before revealing the factoid that she was a mistress of the drumset.
After this tiny revelation exploded the young, virile mind of Fardeen Chowdhury, the four were jamming together in the tiny, cramped that was,
and still is the Clark university band practice room. Horrible place, but that is the place where the magic absolutely happened. Modern classics
such as Jenny Ray, Heavens to Betsy, etc. were all jammed out in that very room. The rest is Worcester indie history, that has
since rocked the very foundations of the city. No, thats not true. They never really got much of a leg up from the surrounding
"indie" community, but whats past is past. Politics was dealt, lies were told; such is the nature of life for a rock and roll band.
Cervix With A Smile's sound consists of a coming together of the band's respective loves and hates of the music that they
love (and probably hate, you never know). So our songs vary from punk, to "indie"
(whatever the hell that is), to ska, to mid 90's alternative rock, with some blues
making its way to the front row at times too. But they make it sound better than your local bar band thats trying to
reinvent its sound, despite what their low audio quality mp3s will have you
believe. They are constantly trying to refine their sound as well as finding new ways to
express what is ultimately much sound and fury...played heartily with
practice-room equipment.
