About Me

My awareness of nature began when I was a young lad cycling out in the country round my home in Leicester. After school, Cambridge and two years in the Royal Navy, I found work in a London publishing house, but soon left to join BBC Television in its early days. Quickly promoted, I was soon making the Zoo Quest films and many other programmes. In 1965 I resigned for the first time, to study for a postgraduate degree in anthropology, but the BBC brought me back to head BBC2, where I introduced colour television to Britain and conceived programmes from Civilisation and The World About Us to Pot Black. By 1969 I was running both BBC television channels but in 1973 I resigned for good, to concentrate on writing and filming. Since then my major books and tv series - Life on Earth, The Living Planet, The Trials of Life, The Private Life of Plants - have all been hailed world-wide as productions of the very highest quality and educational value.I am now Vice-President of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, a Trustee of the British Museum, an Honorary Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge and a Fellow of the Royal Society. My late wife Jane is dearly missed by me. But in her passing she has left me with dearly cherished son, Robert. Lately, I've been trying to date again and get this old boy out there. It is truely hard to date when all your love was once vested in one singular partner and much of the rest into your work.I'd also like to recommend visiting this site http://www.bpassoc.org.uk Join the fight in high blood pressure..

My Interests

My interests would include meandering through an endless array of environments, sucking the sap off bare bark, commenting on the mating habits of animals, frolicking amongst forested areas completely barebacked, moonlit walks amongst the dying grunion carcasses washed up upon the beach, nature documentaries and narrarating my own documentaries. I do, believe it or not, also have a sense of humor.

I'd like to meet:

The few rare species of animals that as of yet are awaiting to be discovered.

Music:

My musical taste is rather refined. I enjoy the classical and the often whimsical music I choose to put in my documentaries. In fact I rather enjoy a bath sometimes and imagine myself as a large whale swimming to the soundtracks I use in my documentaries.

Movies:

The Life of Birds, Cities of the Wild, Survival Island, The Private Life of Plants, (Animal, Vegetable, Mineral), Sir David Attenborough Remembers 'The Ascent of Man', Sir David Attenborough Remembers the Making of 'Civilisation', Bears: Spy in the Woods, The Way We Went Wild, The Truth About 60s TV, Legend of the Lost Tribe, "The Life of Mammals", "The Blue Planet", Ultimate Wild Paradises: The Top Ten Destinations, "The Human Face", Night of a Thousand Shows, State of the Planet and various other films I've either starred in, produced or written entirely myself. I also recently enjoyed the film The Life Aquatic and I also enjoy Jacque Cousteau films.

Television:

BBC, Discovery Channel and various other educational programming available throughout the world.

Books:

I often read classical literature but my main interests lie in research papers, studies and scientific scholarly journals.

Heroes:

My personal heroes are all the many animal species I've encountered throughout my life. I often envy their simple lives of needing only reproduction and attaining enough nutrients to sustain themselves and their offspring. It is a life I could only wish we humans could live ourselves.
