About Me

The Chicago native is just old enough to say he played the now dismantled Maxwell Street Market where bluesmen like Muddy Waters and Little Walter cut their teeth. He would pick up Maxwell Street Jimmy Davis and theyd drink whiskey and play from dawn til nightfall. Later he also accompanied blues legends Homesick James and Robert Johnson contemporary Honeyboy Edwards.Moving to Hollywood in 1996, La Botz found a welcome both in music and in indie films. He acted with stars Willem Dafoe and Mickey Rourke in Steve Buscemis film Animal Factory and later in Lonesome Jim, the latter of which is film festival-bound. Brooke Smith, who acted in Robert Altmans Kansas City and Silence of the Lambs, filmed a documentary about La Botz. But his best known film appearance was the arthouse hit Ghost World (starring Buscemi with Thora Burch and Scarlett Johansen.) La Botz played guitar in the cliché blues band Blueshammer, used to illustrate how blues has become commoditized, straying from its earthy origins.Somewhere in the midst of all of this, Slash asked La Botz to audition for what is now Velvet Revolver. But such a union was not meant to be.Since then, La Botz has played throughout the Los Angeles metro area and toured Europe with Tony Joe White and the Blasters. He has played at Chicagos fabled tavern Rosas, one of the citys last authentic blues bars. Hell continue to tour as All Soul No Money readies release. And yet despite his blues influences, La Botz is a singer/songwriter who aspires to have his CD stocked in the rock bin at retail especially since theres no soul folk bin. His originals bring images from deep inside dreams and the unconscious, images that La Botz had to commit to song just to set them free. You wont necessarily hear his life stories in his songs, but hopefully youll read about them in the press... .. .."Jake La Botz is a creator of dark poetry and haunting song, the kind of music that gets in your bones and rides you for days, a sound and vision only those who've been to the bottom and clawed their way back up can generate. His midnight gifts evoke Hank Williams and Skip James as much as Tom Waits and Dylan. Not everybody will get this music - because not everybody is ready for the truth. --Jerry Stahl (author of Permanent Midnight)Discography: All Soul And No Money - 2004 Joseph Street Records Used To Be - 2000 Utel Records The Original Soundtrack To My Nightmare - 1999 Spinout RecordsFilm Appearances: Animal Factory - directed by Steve Buscemi Ghost World - directed by Terry Zwygoff Lonesome Jim - directed by Steve Buscemi The Grey - directed by Shane Taylor Thirteen Moons - directed by Alexander Rockwell One Night WIth You - directed by Joe D'Augustine
