About Me

The question most often asked might be, "What does Breaking The Silence stand for?" We could reply, "It stands for the kind of music we intended to overflow the Serbian youth, but not the kind that you could become famous for." Breaking The Silence is definitely one of the Serbia's longest running hardcore/punk/alternative music radio program, broadcasted every Thursday night from 6:30 to 8 PM on Radio Smederevo 96.1 MHz. We are located in Smederevo, about 30 miles away from Belgrade - the capital. Our 5000 watt transmitter, allows us to broadcast over the airwaves to all of Smederevo area and as far away as Belgrade and its suburb, including southern Serbia. Years passed since two young kids started a journey into the world of guitar sound. It was the year of 1994th if my memories is not lying to me. We were known as Saturday Night Fever, but as the radio conduces a different monthly schema, we were pushed to change the title. Yet, the idea remained and that is the most important fact. Considering difficult situation in Serbia such as war and economical embargo, Breaking The Silence has proven to stand the test of time. A lot of things happened since than. Sooooooo many different bands, records companies and promoters passed through the air waves of Breaking The Silence radio show. Too many to remember everyone of them. But anyway they all played their part and so did we in this work….and the initial aim was to give the air play to as much new bands which are still keeping the spirit of underground music as it was possible! We stand for a non-profit, non-commercial, non-hierachialy cooperatively organised radio show, which is owned and run by volunteer members - Miroslav, Milan & Milos. So, what does that mean? The show was set up under anarchic principles. Once a week we try hard to bring you the best in HC/punk-rock/experimental heavy music/ "alternative" and just plain rock & roll. It's not just music though. Our multiple friends often drop by which turns our radio show into a sort of comic book radio play with musical commercial breaks. Our personal archives alone hold close to 600 albums, CD's and singles. But the main dish in our weekly update is the new stuff. Already a lot of known and relatively unknown labels provide us with the necessary material to make it happen. And we were always thankful for their help, hoping that this friendly network will not be broken in future. Everyone gets the same treatment at the Breaking The Silence. Known bands with super budget CD's don't get more airplay than unsigned artists that send in demotapes. Our so called policy is that we play at least one song (if possible, two or more, if time permits it) of each new CD in one or more successive weeks. Understand that we do what we can with the limited time we have. Anyway, it is certain that Breaking The Silence provides listeners with the absolute heaviest show on radio. Furthermore, we have chosen to empower ourselves and our listeners through the quality sound, so future generations could judge our great effort. And working on a radio is something that few words can not explain. First of all it is one great experience. Only we will know how it feels to be a part of that radio family. So we`re using this chance to express how thankful we are to those people whom we worked until now. And without them we could not do what we did. Anyway it was radio technicians, our friends, so many good people from different record labels and magazines, promoters and bands who gave us support with their kind words, time and help. And without it all this radio show would never be what it is now. And it is growing everyday in every way. This web site is just one way to improve our radio show and to bring it closer to a wider range of listeners! So, feel free to contact us because we are opened for any kind of cooperation, help, comments or even critics in order to make BREAKING THE SILENCE even more successful in future! Gile, Lars and Loshmi ! Cheers! "KEEP ON ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD!"
