Music:

The Beginning In the mid 1990’s, Branden Stieneckert, former drummer and founding band member, with Quinn Allman, and Jeph Howard, were looking for a full time singer. Jeph was their part time singer but he would much rather play his bass. They had their eyes on Bert McCracken, who had a reputation for screaming so hard, he would vomit all over the stage, and his back flips during shows. They held an audition but people sounded terrible. They decided to finally call Bert, Quinn remembered Bert from pre-school so he did the calling. Bert agreed, and when he joined, Bert was taken over by drugs. The band and music helped him stay sober and off the drugs. The teens refused to get jobs and they panhandled and wrote music, not getting much rest. They would get money barely enough for food. The band started to play locally in Orem, but citizens and venues didn’t want them playing anymore. The band also had thoughts that they were scaring and discomforting some people, because of their music style, alternative rock, post hardcore, screamo, and emocore. They believed, that they should focus on writing music rather than performing it live. Together they wrote and recorded a few demos. One of which is called “Demos from the Basement.” They finally got recognition from John Feldmann, singer for Goldfinger, and took them under consideration to get signed up. Within month he got them contracts. Their hit songs were “Taste of Ink” and “Box Full of Sharp Objects.” At that time Jeph had dreadlocks, and John Feldmann told Jeph he looked like “poo.” The band hard work was finally being recognized. The bad had to change their name from Used to The Used because a band from Boston already had the name. This is what the worked hard for, and this is what they had to hold on to.

Movies:

In Love and Death: Bert McCracken.

Robert Edward McCracken, the youngest member of The Used, was born in Orem, Utah, on February 25, 1982. He was born in a strict Mormon family, he grew up with a younger brother, and three younger sisters. At a young age he was inspired by Michael Jackson, to perform and sing. He didn’t believe in the Mormon faith and was kicked out of the house at age sixteen. Being homeless, addicted to crystal meth and alcohol caused him to drop out of high school. He sang in bands in the Utah Valley area, before joining The Used. When he joined Quinn sacrificed a little of his room so Bert could stay with Quinn and his Anti-Mormon family. This was the start of their amazing friendship, which is expressed in their song “Blue and Yellow.” Bert sometimes plays keyboard for The Used, and he knows how to play trumpet which is useless in their genre of music. Once they were famous, things got easier. Not panhandling gave them time for music, fun, and sleep. Bert soon was clean from drugs, and dating, Kelly Osborne. A singer, actress, fashion designer, and daughter of Ozzy Osborne. While they were dating, Bert got to join the Osbornes in a campaign against The Smashing Pumpkin’s singer, Billy Corgan. The Used got a chance to open for the show, in Los Angeles in December 2002. Bert was backstage and saw Billy with a attitude like “ he was way too important to talk to anyone,” Bert told, Spin Magazine. “ So I playfully stuck my foot out. Then he turned around and gave me this look like ‘ I hate you more than anyone in the world’ and kicked me in the ribs really hard. I’ve always been a Smashing Pumpkins fan. I’m just a trouble maker at heart.” After this event, Bert has been seen in a t-shirt that says “ I tripped Billy Corgan.” Kelly and Bert dated for a long time, and the break up, February 14,2003, was difficult for Bert because he “truly loved this girl.” Now Bert has a tattoo of a heart on his pinky matching his ex-girlfriend’s. During “On my Own,” Bert fell onstage and was rushed to the hospital. There he was diagnosed, with a critical case of pancreatitis, a severe swelling of the pancreas caused by alcohol abuse or gallstones. Soon he recovered and they started their second album, “In Love and Death.” Bert had a rough time the next summer. Kate was his next girlfriend. (Last name not given) They broke up soon and then she told him her secret, that she was pregnant with his child. Although they weren’t dating, they decided to keep the baby, be good friends, work it out, and give their baby the best up-bringing. Tragedy struck on July 4, 2004. Bert got news that Kate and his unborn baby were no longer alive. Kate had died due to a drug overdose, that killed her, and their baby. This event had a huge impact on him and changed the way he wrote in their second album and this is the reason for the title “In Love and Death.” Bert also dedicated a song to his dog, “ All That I’ve Got.” Then his dog was hit by a truck, during the making of the second album. Making the second album he had to deal with the death of his ex-girlfriend, baby, and dog.

Nutty Kid: Quinn Allman.

Quinn Allman, guitarist, was born on January 18, 1982, in Orem, Utah. He started performing in band at a young age, his first band was called “Hey Santos!” But at age fifteen he became part of The Used. When they were poor, he passed his time panhandling and minor thefts. Now he is a vegetarian and he supports PETA, which is an animal rights organization. Quinn is also a very musical person, wh0 knows how to play fifteen different instruments. He is described as “the nutty kid who eats his own boogers and doesn’t wash his hands ever,” by all band members, but also say he is a “comical individual. Bert says that he is “truly spiritual and warm individual.” Quinn was also arrested outside his own tour bus because he was against the officer who was kicking fans off the property in late 2003. He was trying to avoid having a fan getting arrested for being out the bus. He told the officer that is was okay because he was a band member, and the cop told him step away, and Quinn didn’t. He was arrested. The officer put him in a squad car and pulled into a dark store parking lot and took forty five minutes to fill out an arrest report. “I got really mad and peed all over the police car, and the police didn’t even know,” he said. Once they took him to Jacksonville Jail in Florida, where he spent twenty two hours, there police acted like he was a real criminal. They put him into a cell and played The Used music, and was making fun of it. They took Quinn to a judge where he was fined 153 dollars and back in a cell; no phone call, and sat for another three and a half hours. This showed fans his commitment to his music and his fans.

Books:

Boy Scout becomes a rockstar

Jepharee Michael Howard, The Used’s Bass guitar player, was born on January 4, 1979. Jepharee which is also known as Jeph or another comment nickname is Jepha, was an only child and a boy scout while growing up in Orem, Utah. In school, Jeph had a problem making friends, because kids said he talked to himself too much. Before joining the band he worked as a baker and a cook. Now Jepha owns a wiener dog, named Zelda, after one of his favorite video games “The Legend of Zelda.” He also enjoys horror films, Japanese Culture and he believes in UFOs. Just like Quinn he is a vegetation and a PETA supporter. He drinks six to eight cups of green tea, his favorite tea, a day. But also drinks a lot of alcohol, and is usually found on the “Party Bus” while touring. Something that people recognize Jeph for are his unique tattoos and piercings. Jepha has a tattoo on his neck with an angel on the right side and a devil on the left side, and the word Luck between them. He believe that is the only way to get through both of them. He also has fifteen piercings. But aren’t the only qualities of Jepha, he is funny, and an awesome bass guitar player who has played for The Used since day one and filled in for other bass players, in bands like 30 Seconds to Mars, and The Tonight Show.
