Band Members: My Electric Love Affair (MELA)After years of trial and error, it seems MELA have finally got the chemistry right. Clanging guitars and droning keys, all tied together by the simple yet effective drumming. Psychedelia with a modern twist. Even without the vocals, their sound is individual to its self. They may be likened to bands such as stereolab but they certainly put their own stamp on it. They also bring something to a live stage that many bands these days seem to lack, presence! Whether you love or hate them, you cannot deny them that. In the words of Steve Coogan, ‘its better to be loved by a few than kind of liked by many’. My Electric Love Affair play what they want to hear and never compromise. That is what separates them from NME’s flavour of the week, they create music with substance. The Liar and the Whore- After five years in the making, this conceptual gathering, have finally taken shape. Originally formed by one man and his broken analogue Tascam 8 track, it has now grown into a creative collective. Taking inspiration from the velvet underground and tom waits, it successfully sounds like neither. The music has a disjointed grace that flows together with an awkward ambience that could be likened to Nico, The Vaselines or The Jesus and Mary Chain. It is strong in its frailty. Conflicting between its influences and its individuality, this is music that takes a few listens to realise its beauty and complexity. The same thing was said about inspiring musicians such as Nick Drake and Devendra Banhart . Plus, its resourcefulness deserves adoration in its self, for example the use of wine glasses and laundry baskets as percussion. Even their scratchy demos have more charm and distinction than most present day acts.Mr Lee Aitken-It is a rarity to find songs that are so well written they stand alone without over complicating them with samples, drum patterns and gimmicks. Lee is simply an acoustic guitar and soulful singing. Which to be honest, unless you are really talented, is hard to pull off, yet he does with more soul and modesty than most. So many nights spent in small ambient clubs listening to yet another singer/song writer complain for six songs can make even the most open-minded listener a bit apprehensive. However, Mr Aitkens upbeat blues driven melodies are a breath of fresh air in an otherwise polluted minefield of acoustic melodramaticsBodeadly-Specky punk finally has a home, and that home is the dynamic Bodeadly. Who would have thought that a mutal respect for Bo Diddly and Elvis Costello would produce the frantic and conflicting pop musings that blaze enthusiasm and vigour like no other of the same vein. Bo Deadly Drive their new town angst into melodic and excitable tunes that frankly make me want to dance. In fact, I think you can only experience the same buzz by putting a whole bag of skittles in your mouth at once and then washing it down with a two-litre bottle of irn-bru. This is music with extra E numbers.Boyfriend/Girlfriend-Hailing from small town obscurity, Boyfriend/Girlfriend has a sound that is mightier than their years of experience. Crashing beats, a melodic yet discordant fusion of guitars and the wiry Scottish vocals with a boy/girl twist. ‘A melodic punch in the face’ (localism records). Their youthful exuberance is addictive and their song writing displays a maturity that most bands never achieve. The best news of all is that they are even better live! Fun, enthusiastic and most importantly…..entertaining!
