Penny Reel

About Me

Penny Reel, comprised of vocalist Joanne Highland and instrumentalist Brandon Niznik, first played together as members of a ska ensemble at their high school in Atascadero, Ca. They are both products of the wisdom and education of Southern California ska veteran Brian Wallace. Joanne and Brandon began expanding their knowledge of Jamaican music at an early age, each recording and performing with many already-established acts. After relocating to Los Angeles, the duo continued to perform music of their Atascadero studio project Penny Reel Junction , in addition to their new tunes produced by a collaborative writing process. The rhythm and feel of the band is undeniably rooted in the sounds of ska, reggae, and rocksteady; however, the themes and delivery of Penny Reel’s music seem to escape the conventions of any one era. Brandon lays down a steady, strictly traditional rhythm to support and complement Joanne’s smooth vocals, creating an organic sound reminiscent of the old school reggae that has inspired them. They never stray from the traditional style, but are sure to capture the attention of anyone who likes the sound of a female vocalist and acoustic guitar.
**We have an acoustic EP!-- If you see us around, say "hey, give me your EP!!" and we'll say "yes! $5!" We're working on getting our tracks available for online purchase as well. Til then, dig these new tunes -- have a listen, and leave some love!
