BE INFORMED ABOUT SICKLE CELL DISEASE This is a subject that is very dear to my heart.
My granddaughter Jamie (A TRUE FIGHTER AND SURVIVOR)was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease at birth. I have tried to learn everything there is to know about this subject. Jamie had two strokes back to back in 2000 when she was only 8 years old. Since then, she has had to receive blood transfusions every three weeks. After receiving transfusions for a year, she had to be put on Desferol injections for 10 hours a day to prevent Iron overload. We did her's at bedtime so that she could go to school. In 2006, they came out with a pill called Exjade which took the place of Desferol. (Thank God) She has to dissolve the pills in water or whatever her favorite beverage is and drink it. Jamie gets tired of taking medication but as I've often told her, the alternative is worse. They are trying to prevent another stroke. She was blessed to still be able to function after the other two. Jamie is 16 now in the 11th grade and holding her own in school. I AM VERY VERY PROUD OF HER AND LOVE HER VERY MUCH. As long as she loves herself she can be comfortable in her own skin and forget the stereotypical remarks thrown at her by ignorant people who don't know a thing about SCD and still need to be informed.

An Open Letter to my Friends, Colleagues and Supporters in the Entertainment Industry.
I have learned to smile when I wasn't happy, to sing when I didn't feel like it, and to do things just to please my fans.My attitude was, "Okay, you're just going to have to face what you've got. Suck it up and try to make the best of it."Recently I've learned there was a larger stage than I could ever imagine. A stage that would enable me to take my message to those who needed it the most. People like me. People with Sickle Cell Disease.Tionne..WHAT IS SICKLE CELL DISEASE?
Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. People with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that contain mostly hemoglobin* S, an abnormal type of hemoglobin. Sometimes these red blood cells become sickle-shaped (crescent shaped) and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels.

When sickle-shaped cells block small blood vessels, less blood can reach that part of the body. Tissue that does not receive a normal blood flow eventually becomes damaged. This is what causes the complications of sickle cell disease. There is currently no universal cure for sickle cell disease.Hemoglobin – is the main substance of the red blood cell. It helps red blood cells carry oxygen from the air in our lungs to all parts of the body. Normal red blood cells contain hemoglobin A. Hemoglobin S and hemoglobin C are abnormal types of hemoglobin. Normal red blood cells are soft and round and can squeeze through tiny blood tubes (vessels). Normally, red blood cells live for about 120 days before new ones replace them.People with sickle cell conditions make a different form of hemoglobin A called hemoglobin S (S stands for sickle). Red blood cells containing mostly hemoglobin S do not live as long as normal red blood cells (normally about 16 days). They also become stiff, distorted in shape and have difficulty passing through the body’s small blood vessels. When sickle-shaped cells block small blood vessels, less blood can reach that part of the body. Tissue that does not receive a normal blood flow eventually becomes damaged.
