MySpace Editor Rasheed RichmondGeoff Barone is a singer-songwriter and a multi-instrumentalist originally from Niagara Falls, NY. From starting on the keyboard, which he received on his birthday in 1987, Geoff has taught himself many others instruments to a high level of proficiency. “When I started writing music I wanted to know how the other instruments would play the parts.” This inspired Geoff to not only learn the instrument, but master them and find his own voice in each. “I think this is what sets my songs apart from others, in the sense that I know what the other musicians are doing and know how to play appropriately with them.”
Over the years Geoff has been influenced and inspired by many styles of music. “Andrew Lloyd Webber I think was the catalyst for me to start writing songs and music, but growing up in my family there was always music.” His Grandfather, a jazz pianist, his Father, a rock guitar player and songwriter, music was imbedded in his DNA and always present. Geoff spent his high school years becoming more serious about his art, primarily on guitar. He would spend countless hours on the edge of his bed and basement honing his craft.
In 1999, Geoff first heard the song “Grace” by Jeff Buckley. “After hearing this song and album, my musical tastes and writing styles turned 180 degrees. “I started becoming more interested in the song, more so than the technical aspect of music.” Geoff spent so many years honing and focusing on the “tricks of the trade” of each respective instrument, that he accumulated a vast knowledge of know how, which aided him in his songwriting.
In 2001, Geoff released his first solo album “Mercy”, which included many songs that were later performed by the band “Under The Eve” which was started from Geoff’s needs for a band to perform the music in a live setting. “From ‘01 to ‘06, we played around Western New York wherever we could, opening for whoever, whenever and released a couple of EPs”
In late 2004, Geoff noticed an ad in the local newspaper, that auditions were being held for the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Being the Andrew Lloyd Webber fan that he was, Geoff went for the audition and 3 months later got the part as Jesus. Geoff went on a year later to star in another musical as “Perchick” in Fiddler On The Roof.
It was around this time that Geoff began thinking about moving to New York. “ I spent so many years playing the same clubs and spending so much time and energy on my art, to no avail. I pictured myself as a teenager, sitting on the edge of my bed spending all that time on my music, that if I didn’t move I was afraid that all my passion would be in vain” Geoff moved to the Big Apple in April of ‘06 where he now resides writing and recording himself and others in his home studio.
