Don't Let's Start

I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

I'm a veterinarian/frustrated poet. I move around a lot (but, as a result, I have a really good group of friends in many different places. I just bought a house, though, so it looks like I'm in Chicagoland for the long haul. At least until I move back to Raleigh, anyway.

I'm originally from Florida, home of 3 of my favorite things: Spanish moss, warm water beaches, and fresh water springs.

I hate ignorance that wants to stay that way (you get at least a "B" for effort). Also, I tend to get along much better with people on the "left" end of the political spectrum. But I do like to meet a variety of people.

I am a little afraid of heights, occasionally the dark (don't want to get eaten by a grue), have a hidden talent for being able to get out of handcuffs, and could eat Weetabix every day. I am probably a little too excited about my Roomba. Additionally, I can blind you with science. None of this says anything about who I really am though....

This is the last poem I wrote (about two years ago :(. I've been so focused on medicine since I graduated vet school, I guess. I need balance, I'm working on it):

"Beauty Sweeps Over Most Large" by Fara
Beauty swoops over most large
following winds and currents
of human guilt and failure.
It is the image of Carolina Yellow Jessamine
Or deep in the course skin, bones
of an elephant--
tasteless, odorless, white.
It is the likeness of a man
torn by uncontrollable passion
on the sublime, the irrational and the obscene.

My Interests

MUSIC, travel (Chiang Mai is my fave city so far...), writing, indie movies, bad TV, good conversation, animals (dogs, cats, goats, elephants, and rodents of usual size), tattoos, "getting the husky", running, bellydancing is fun, being in and around the water, amateur manatee research...My del.icio.us links page (now updated on a semi-regular basis) is: here

I'd like to meet:

Anyone interesting, zany (but sane in the most important ways!), kind, open, fun, introspective and real.
And this baby gorilla because he's got enviably cool hair... img src="http://www.greenexpander.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03 /gorilla-1.jpg"

Music:

Home, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, the Jayhawks, The Afghan Whigs, Archers of Loaf, Old Bowie, Mott the Hoople/Ian Hunter, Roxy Music, Catherine Wheel, The Pixies/Frank Black, Two Gallants, the Velvet Underground, The Boomtown Rats, Crime and the City Solution, Soul Coughing/Mike Doughty, The Tindersticks, Fugazi/The Evens, Tori Amos, Neutral Milk Hotel, Mr. Bungle, The Orb, Cat Stevens, Dismemberment Plan, Chemical Brothers, Radiohead, For Squirrels, New Order, Death Cab for Cutie, Pinback, Postal Service, Nick Cave on Bad Weed, Blur, PJ Harvey, Counting Crows, The The, Mates of State, The Dirty Three, Magnolia Electric Co., T. Rex, the Who, some electronica, some metal and a lot in between (many, many others).I really don't like: Creed. Silverchair (possibly the worst band of all time--and yes, that includes Molly Hatchett), "Werewolves of London", Any version of "Drift Away" is crap, pop country, elevator jazz, the Greatful Dead (though Phish is okay in small doses)...

Television:

Don't watch too much but when I do: Cartoons: Simpsons, Adult Swim (Aqua Teen and Home Movies are my fave). The Daily Show/Colbert Report, Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared reruns (thanks to Netflix), Scrubs, Or the Discover Health Channel. 187-Pound Tumor Removal? I know what I'm watching tonight...

Books:

John Irving--"Son of the Circus" and "Hotel New Hampshire" Saul Bellow --"Henderson the Rain King", Milan Kundera-- "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", Michael Pollan -- "The Botany of Desire.", Leonard Cohen--"Stranger Music", Edna St. Vincient Millay poems, Anything by David Sedaris, especially "Barrell Fever" and "Me Talk Pretty One Day."--made me laugh my ASS off...

Two recent books that I HIGHLY recommend are "Spook" by Mary Roach and "Animals in Translation" by Temple Grandin. Also, for fiction stuff "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire was very excellent, much more interesting than the musical (which was only okay)

Current reading: "The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman

Heroes:

Jim, the chain-smoking philosopher, and Greg Hulse who the world lost way too soon...And Buckminster Fuller.
