Sophie Ramsay grew up in rural Perthshire. She has always sung Scots songs, since she was a little girl, many of which she learnt from her parents, and many of these, they learnt from their parents. At school and university, Sophie sung chorally, classically and operatically, (she had choral and vocal scholarships to St Andrews University) but the old Scots songs always ran alongside, and Sophie prefers not to sing them in a classical way. She sang at various concerts, Burns Nights, parties, ceilidhs and gatherings all over Scotland. One day, (around the time of her finals) some travelling French musicians from conservatoire in Paris came visiting with their French Gypsy Jazz band, and Sophie found herself inadvertently swept away by this delightful shaggy-haired troupe. Returning about a year later, she had recorded most of her CD 'Ca' the Yowes', with Benoît Leseure, Jérôme Brajtman, Adrien Daoud and Rémi Delangle. She performed a show, 'Comin' thro' the Rye' at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2006, with Benoit on the violin and then 'By Yon Castle Wa'' at the Edinburgh Fringe 2007. Both of these received critial acclaim. Now she has begun to write her own songs, and she hopes you like them.
