My real name in Hong Kong is Bak Mei, but I am better known in the west as Pai Mei. Whether justified or not, my traitorous reputation has led to real life animosity between practitioners of my namesake martial art and practitioners of arts identified with those whom I have been accused of betraying. In the accounts of some of my practitioners, their founder did not so much betray Shaolin as decline to join their rebellion against the Qing. Other tales portray me as having been banished from Shaolin Temple because I killed several of my fellow monks when I first tried out my new style.
