The truth is calypso music was the dominant genre globally during the 1940’s into the 1960’s and was in fact the first music form to claim platinum status back in 1950 thereabouts when Harry Belafonte sold over one million copies of his album entitled Calypso. That collection is still a major seller today and to date has thus far moved in excess of five million copies in vinyl and CD form. The 105 seeks to capitalise on this established knowledge of the music to revamp the popularity of calypso on the world scene and hopefully finally see the genre reaping the rewards denied it decades ago. The founding members of the band; Vincent DeLeon, Clint DeLeon and Jason Garraway have taken authentic calypso and blended into it subtle elements of soul, hip-hop and other forms to create what they have coined, Neo-Calypso. This form maintains the dignity of true calypso as the additives have not been allowed to overpower the root of the music allowing for a fresh yet warmly familiar sound. The 105 through its music pays homage to the likes of the Grandmaster Lord Kitchener after whom the band has been named to some extent. Clint DeLeon, while on a visit to Britain met with some men who knew Kitchener and one of them in particular, a man named Bob Jones, took him around to some of the placed where the Road March King of the World hung out and performed back in the days when he lived in England. De Leon even had the honour of playing in some of these places. The bus De Leon rode on to get to most of these places was known as the 105 and since this would have been the same route Kitchener took to get around the DeLeon Brothers decided to name the band after the route. DeLeon also discovered that the likes of Growling Tiger, Atilla, Roaring Lion, Pretender and other legends are still revered today by people and musicians back in Britain and other parts of Europe. Be on the lookout for The 105 and hop on board as soon as it pulls in to a club or concert hall near you. The band is working on a repertoire of music that will surely excite and even invigorate listeners. Already The 105 has established connections in the United States, Britain and Japan as the members and their support team work towards taking the music of Trinidad and Tobago to the world and not simply to our own people in Caribbean communities abroad.SEEMS LIKE ITS OVER
